  2. My Story

  3. Breast cancer is not a sudden occurrence, but a process that has been developing for a period of time, so it is not a medical emergency.

  4. Cause of Breast Cancer • Unknown • Factors increase our risk, ie. genetics and lifestyle • What do we know? Normal cells are damaged and have an uncontrolled growth pattern within the breast and may travel beyond the breast.

  5. How is breast cancer described medically?

  6. First, relationship to ducts and lobules… • Normal ducts and lobules~one or more layers of orderly organized cells • In Situ~uncontrolled or random cells, but contained within the ducts and lobules • Invasive or Infiltrating~uncontrolled or random cells that have grown through the wall into the breast tissue

  7. Second, the cancer began… • Ductal~began within the ducts* • Lobular~began within the lobules

  8. Third, hormone receptors… • ER~Estrogen receptors • PR~Progestrone receptors • HER2~Human Epidermal Growth Factor receptor* • Each receptor is referred to as positive or negative • Triple Negative Breast Cancer*

  9. Finally, size and growth of tumor… • Growth rate~tumor can double in 23 to 209 days • Size~indicator of stage • Stage 0-in situ • Stage 4- metastasis

  11. My Diagnosis • Triple Negative Breast Cancer • Stage 2~tumor >5cm but no lymph node involvement • In Situ

  12. My Treatment • Neoadjuvant chemotherapy~TAC • Taxotere, Adriamycin, Cytoxin • Double Mastectomy • Radiation Therapy • Reconstruction

  15. Cholesterol - LDL <130 Blood Pressure (BP) 120/80 Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) <100 Body Mass Index (BMI) 18.5-25 Know Your Numbers

Self check every month ABCDE Asymmetry - not even Border - jagged edges, crusty Color - uneven, not consistent, oozing, bleeding Diameter - >6mm (head of pencil eraser) Evolving - changes in shape and size Predisposing Characteristics - fair skin, freckles, blue or green eyes, red or blonde hair, living in a “sun state” Cancer Screenings - Melanoma

  17. Mammogram 40-45 - optional 45-55 - every year >55 - every other year ACS guidelines, if no familial history Self-Breast examinations no longer recommended - ??? Cancer Screenings - Breast

  18. Stool Test and/or Colonoscopy 45 - first stool test or colonoscopy; if stool test is abnormal, then colonoscopy recommended Routine - every 10 years Cancer Screenings - Colon

  19. Pap 21-29 - every 3 years 30-65 - every 5 years with HPV screen Cancer Screenings - Cervical
