9-5 Adding/Subtracting Polynomials Objective: To add and subtract polynomials. Standard 10.0
What does each prefix mean? mono one bi two tri three
What about poly? one or more A polynomial is a monomial or a sum/difference of monomials. A monomial is a number, a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variables Important Note!! An expression is not a polynomial if there is a variable in the denominator.
State whether each expression is a polynomial. If it is, identify it. 1) 7y - 3x + 4 trinomial 2) 10x3yz2 monomial 3) not a polynomial
ADDING: (4X2 + 5X – 1) + (6X2 – 3X – 4) Method 1: Combine Like Terms Method 2: Like Elimination 4x2 + 5x – 1 + 6x2 – 3x – 4 10x2 + 2x – 5 4x2 + 5x – 1 + 6x2 – 3x – 4 10x2 + 2x – 5
