  6. Research Assignment: Please copy on 27R • 1. You will choose one topic and create three 1.5 page descriptive and detailed diary entries based on your topic.You will use both research and original ideas! • (I will show you models in class) • Each entry has its own due date: • 1st entry due: 11/19-11/20 • 2nd entry due: 12/3-12/4 • 3rd entry due: 12/13-12/14 • These topics will be directly related to historical events you are learning in US History. You can use Mr. Medina and his notes/your history textbook as a reference!

  7. Specific Guidelines • The diary needs a neat and illustrated cover • Each entry must include: • 1. Dates • 2. Setting • 3. Vivid (detailed) description of characters • 4. Actual historical events/people/locations based off of research

  8. You are writing this as if you lived during that time. Therefore, all of your emotions/thoughts/family life is fictional and the people/events happening around you are real! You are reacting and writing about real events. This means you are mixing both fact and fiction to create a historical fiction piece and will be citing your sources appropriately . • We have several scheduled dates to do research! Please do not be absent during those days so that you are able to complete this assignment. If you have a computer/access to the internet at home, please conduct additional research to create a strong diary

  9. Topics: Please copy these down • 1. Andrew Jackson’s presidency (Written as Jackson) • 2. War of 1812 (Written as a soldier) • 3. Western Expansion (Written as a pioneer) • 4. Mexican-American War (Written as a soldier) • 5. Trail of Tears (Written as a Native American) • 6. Transcendentalism (poetry movement: written as either Henry David Thoreau or a student of his) • 7. Early women’s suffrage (voting) movement: (Written as Susan B. Anthony) • 8. Irish Immigration/Potato famine (Written as an Irish immigrant) • Note: Many of these topics you may have little to no knowledge about! This is why research is essential. If you choose to write as President Jackson, Susan B. Anthony or as a student of Henry David Thoreau you must gather information on the lives of these people in order to make your diaries accurate. All topics require extensive research and description!

  10. Historic Diary Questions: Separate piece of paper • 1. What perspective is the diary written in? • 2. What details does the woman include in her diary? • 3. What mood does she create for the reader? Please select at least one quote that shows this mood and explain. • 4. How does the setting influence her story? • 5.What type of source is this? • 6. Pick one thing you read in her diary and complete the visualization (V) activity.
