5. Genetically Modified Food • Early 90’s • Research done over several years, but now it was brought out to the public • Families were worried about what it was doing to their food and how it could affect their health • We had understand what genetically modified food. We then needed to be able to explain it to others.

6. DVD • March 1997 • Began to replace the VHS • Families were now introduced to a new way to watch movies on TV • We had to be able to change over to the new technology and introduce families to this new technology

7. Game Consoles • Entire Decade • New game consoles were coming out for several companies throughout the entire decade. • Families or members of the family were now spending more time in front of the TV. • We needed to see another challenge of the family, and how they were no longer spending as much one on one time together. esi.uclm.es commons.wikimedia.org gameconsoles.com

9. World Trade Center Bombing • February 26, 1993 • Terrorism hit American soil • Families now had a fear in them • when the next attack would be • and where would it take place. • We needed to talk to families about appreciating time together and being prepared.

Mad Cow Disease • Beginning of the 90’s through 1996 • Cows were coming down with a disease that killed them, and there was a fear it could be passed to • humans. • Families were now nervous to eat meat, • and were more nervous consumers. • We needed to educate individuals on what mad cow disease was and how to protect ourselves. http://www.skrewtips.com/img/sick_cow.jpg

Columbine Shooting • April 20, 1999 • 12 students, 1 teacher, and the 2 gunman were killed in the shooting • Families were affected by such a tragic • event that happened in schools. • We needed to be there to help students cope with such a shocking event. 13. Medical Advances • Stem Cell Research • Cloning • Safe Medical Devices of 1990 • AED Machine

14. Stem Cell Research • Early 1990’s • The discovery of stem cell and the beginning of research. • Families are encountering a controversial topic which could impact the family system. • We needed to become informed about the topic, and see how it may effect the “humans” that we speak about.

15. Cloning • 1997 • Dolly the first sheep was cloned. • Families now may have other options when having children. • We had to change how we talked about the reproduction and birth of humans.

16. Safe Devices of 1990 • October 1990 • This gave consumer protection to individuals • The families now had protection for medical products that they used. • We need to inform students and consumers of this right/protection that the government had given them.

17.
