The Jonah Profile Book of Jonah
Many Lessons from History • Matt. 12:40 – “As Jonah was three days in the…” • Matt. 11:21 – “Woe to thee, Chorazin and Bethsaida…” • So many lessons – for us. • Jonah was typical. His reaction was much like ours today. • Look with me…
The Rebellious Face • Chapter 1 • 1) Things “falling into place” doesn’t mean it is of God. • The ship “going his way”, may have been of Satan. • Having the fare wasn’t God helping him sin. • Satan showers us with so many “blessings” we don’t see God. • 2) Sin hurts others: merchants, sailors • 3) Here – some judgment is inescapable • Ultimately – true judgment is inescapable.
The Obedient Face • 1) First step is repentance, always. • We’ve gone the wrong direction. Turn around. • Note: Nineveh responds more quickly and sincerely than Jonah • Admitting any mistake is difficult and embarrassing. • 2) His “call” remains – running doesn’t free us from responsibility. • Nineveh is still useful to God, but they must repent. • Does Jonah get “credit” for fulfilling his calling?
The Unsanctified Face • His heart wasn’t in it – obedient but not loving. • Eph. 4:15; Rom. 1:14-16; • Do we have pity for the lost? Do we remember? • Material things, even inconsequential things dominate our passions.
There Needs to be Growth • Jonah’s growth wasn’t accomplished in Chapter 1 or 2. • Maybe not even in Chapter 4. • How long to realize we’ve failed God and ourselves? • How long to cleanse our conscience and change our lives? • God is patient – But also just!
