Common cold What is a common cold? • On average, an adult has a common cold 2-5 times a year.5 • Common colds are minor infections of the nose and throat caused by more than 200 different viruses.6 • A cold may last for about one week, but some colds last longer, especially in children, the elderly and those in poor health.6 • Colds are highly contagious. These tubes carry air to the lungs. • People who have bronchitis often have a cough that brings up mucus. The tube is inflamed and contains more mucus than usual.

Cough and Bronchitis Two main types of bronchitis7 Acute bronchitis (short term) Chronic bronchitis (ongoing) • Causes: Infections or lung irritants (e.g. viruses that cause colds and the flu). • Infection with these viruses: Droplet infection when coughing or through physical contact. • Duration: a few days up to 10 days. • Factors that increase the risk:exposure to tobacco smoke, dust, fumes, vapors and air pollution. • Main cause: Smoking • Occurrence: If the lining of the bronchial tubes is constantly irritated and inflamed. Viruses or bacteria can easily infect the irritated bronchial tubes. • Duration: Long-term cough with mucus. • Chronic bronchitis is an ongoing, serious condition.
