Lara Carr Steelman; John T. Doby Sociology of Education, Vol. 56, No. 2. (Apr., 1983), pp. 101-109. Family Size and Birth order as Factors on the IQ Performance of Black and White Children
Purpose of the Experiment • Evaluate the health and well-being of American children
Hypothesis • There is a negative relationship between family size and ability • There is a negative relationship between birth-order and ability
Data • Obtained from Cycle II of the ‘National Health Examination Survey • Multi-stage, stratified probability sample • Household units/ over selected • 96% made it to final survey
Subjects • Non-institutionalized children ages 6-11 in the United States
Independent Variable • Family size (# of siblings) • Birth order • Race • Maternal/Paternal education • Family income • Maternal age
Dependent Variable • IQ performance • IQ subtests • Vocabulary and Block design subtests of the full-scale Wechsler IQ examination for children • Adjusted for sex differences
Theoretical Construct/ Operational Definition • Theoretical Construct • IQ • Operational Definition • Wechsler IQ examination for children
Regression results yielded when predicting the IQ performance of white children
Regression results obtained in the prediction of the IQ performance of black children
Significant effects were found only on the vocabulary performance of white children and of black children • Results supports the view that family size affects overall tested ability through its impact on verbal ability
I Would Change • Less variables • Parent/Child contact • Parental IQ
