An Introduction to Global Warming • The earth’s temperature had risen by one degree in the past century • Most of this increase has occurred during the past two decades • Today there is stronger evidence that the global warming effect over the last 50 years is a direct effect of human activities

  3. What is Global Warming? • Natural Greenhouse Effect • Enhanced Greenhouse Effect

  4. How much do we emit? • Every person in the United States emits 6.6 tons of greenhouse gases (CO2, NO, CH4) per year • The US emits more greenhouse gases per person than any other country

  5. Impacts of Global Warming • Rising global temperature • Rise in sea level • Change in precipitation • Change in regional climate • EVERY organism will be affected by global warming

  6. Climate Changes • Global mean temperature has increased by .5-1.0°F since the late 19th century • The 20th century’s 15 years were the warmest years recorded

  7. Impacts on Water Resources • Climate change is expected to increase evaporation and precipitation • This will affect five major areas: • Navigation • Hydropower • Water Supply and Demand • Environmental Quality • Flood Control

  9. Case Study: The Lower Passaic River • Discharges into Northeastern New Jersey and Southeastern New York • The Lower Passaic River flows through the most industrialized areas of the state of New Jersey- Newark • Severe contamination began during the industrial revolution

  10. Dioxin Contamination • 1951- 1956- Diamond Alkali Facility dumped 2,3,7,8 TCDD, the most toxic dioxin in the Lower Passaic River • 1984- The contaminated soil was removed by vacuuming the streets and stored in a Diamond Alkali site

  11. What is being done? • New Jersey Community Water Watch • Sets up cleanups • Educates others about environmental issues • Water Pollution Education • Global Warming Education • Recruits volunteers • Waterway monitoring
