This project aims to help 2000 vulnerable households in fuel poverty by providing a tangible means to identify low temperatures. Partners offer free safety checks, smoke alarms, grants, and services. The cube, initially planned as a pyramid, evolved into a cube and was distributed effectively to various agencies for outreach. The outcomes included 26 referrals to warmth schemes, fire safety checks, surveys, and service referrals. The cube project was implemented at no cost to the energy conservation team, demonstrating the power of partnerships and innovation.

The problem Approx 2000vulnerable households in Fuel Poverty Source: ECDC HECA return 2003-4:
We already had.. • A Fuel Poverty Strategy approved at committee level • Dedicated officer time (30% of a full-time post) • Targetted mailshots to those on certain benefits • Developing partnerships with other organisations • Community based presentations and promotions (Warm Homes Week, Energy Efficiency Week, Flu-jab clinics….)
But we wanted more. We wanted to provide vulnerable householders with the means to identify low temperatures in their homes, together with a contact number to call for advice. HOW?
The challenge… to increase the number of vulnerable householders self referring to the energy conservation team.

East Cambridgeshire Offering adaptation grants and access to the handyman service to elderly and disabled residents
All partners are members of the Strategic Partnership • The strategic partnership, through public consultation, developed the community strategy. • The strategy hinges on a number of aims and objectives..
Strategic aim A: Provide affordable and appropriate housing & infrastructure • Relevant objectives • Increase the supply of Affordable Housing and integrate it into the network of towns and villages • Ensure Affordable Housing is available to those in the greatest need and for those who contribute to the needs of East Cambridgeshire • Ensure that existing housing remains in good condition for the foreseeable future
Strategic aim E: Improve accessibility to services, especially by disadvantaged groups • Objective • Improve uptake of services for older people and the rural elderly
Two issues:- 1. What to produce to carry partners’ messages? 2. How do we finance it?
We needed something tactile to carry the message.. thermometer goes here! A pyramid! Four sides, four messages.. Great!
A cardboard pop up pyramid, with room for a round thermometer and messages and numbers on each side

The project was approved approved. But…. As a cube!
Who paid for the project? But it didn’t cost energy conservation a penny!
