Two Tribes and Their Customs Two tribes that live in Sahel are the Dogon and the Fulani. Some of the Dogon’s customs are: • Dancing in religious rituals like the dama. • Genealogists, musicians, poets, iron workers and wood artisans may not wear ritual masks, and live apart in special sections of a village. • Villages are laid out according to a plan that represents the human body. • Village elders meet in a building at the village’s head. Some of the Fulani’s customs are: • The true Fulani is someone who displays “palaaku”, a mixture of three values • Males beat each other with walking sticks and no signs of pain are allowed. • When a bride’s father transfers one of his cattle to the groom, only then is the marriage considered official. • Herding is an all-male occupation that during the flooding of the Niger delta sends young men to dry-season camps for months at a time.
An Example of a Meal They Eat • One Sahel recipe is groundnut stew with chicken. It is a mix of vegetables and meat with some natural peanut butter.

Four Types of Vegetation • Acacia – They have deep root-systems that are good for arid places and its feathery leaves protect its bark. • Baobab – The Baobab is a fireproof tree. It is found all around the Sahel. When the tree grows it can reach 50 feet! • Jujube – It is a small spiny tree and its height range is from 23-66 feet. It provides a lot of farmers with the food they eat. • Cram-cram – A prickly short lived grass is the main choice of herds that graze on it. It is found all throughout the region.
