  1. Romans 12:17-21

  2. Matthew 26:26-29 [26] And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." [27] Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. [28] For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. [29] But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

  3. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM

  4. John 13:16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. John 8:29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him." MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. • The aim of many people varies from person to person. • Some aim at becoming successful. • Some at becoming wealthy. • Some at becoming well known. • constant aim of everyone who really knows the Lord should be to be well-pleasing to Him

  5. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM • Could anyone, anywhere, have a greater ambition than this? • Is it your ambition to please Him? – for here, surely, is the secret of successful living. • In this lesson we willconsider ten of these “secrets”, but it could rightly be said that all ten are summed up in the theme of this study. • There is nothing greater than living day by day a life which is well-pleasing to the Lord.

  6. WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS FOR PLEASING GOD? MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM • See what the Holy Spirit has recorded about Enoch. Genesis 5:22-24 [22] After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. [23] So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. [24] And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Hebrews 11:5 [5] By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

  7. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM • All down the ages there have been men and women whose supreme ambition it has been to please God. • Most people today are bent upon pleasing themselves2 Tim 3:4. • But there are those who are seeking to fulfil God’s conditions of a life that is well-pleasing to Him. 2 Timothy 3:4 [4] traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, Judges 17:6 [6] In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 1 Corinthians 10:5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

  8. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 1. We must be born again. • Every man and woman is “controlled by the sinful nature”, and while we are “living according to the sinful nature” (Romans 8:5) we can never please God. • The first need, therefore, is to be born again, so that we are “controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit” (Romans 8:9). Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Romans 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  9. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 2. We must separate ourselves from all sinful and doubtful things. When we are born again we become children of God 1 Jn 3:1. 2 Timothy 2:3-4 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. [4] No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. But the Christian life is a warfare, and we are soldiers 2 Tim 2:3-4. 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. The lives of worldly Christians are full of sinful and hindering things, but those who wish to please Him disentangle themselves from the things which hinder them in their Christian life.

  10. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM your hands, feet, eyes, ears, lips… in other words yourself? 3. We must dedicate our lives to Him. • Romans 12:1, and notice the words, “holy and pleasing to God”. Romans 6:13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. • Separation from sinful and doubtful things is negative, but the dedication of ourselves to the Lord is positive. Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. • Have you ever presented your body to the Lord? • Have you handed over to Him the “parts” of your body (Rom 6:13)

  11. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM Believers who witness to the Lord’s grace and power, by lives which are consistent and by lips which are ready to speak for Him, are well-pleasing to the Lord. 4. We must be good witnesses. • God has put us in trust with the gospel, and what a sacred trust it is! • The gospel is for everybody, and our whole business is to make it known – 1Thes 2:4. Psalm 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. 1 Thessalonians 2:4But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. • Notice that Paul says, “…we speak…” • Do we speak? • Perhaps we need to pray the prayer of the psalmist in order to please Him

  12. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 5. We must be obedient. • Colossians 3:20. • If it is well-pleasing to earthly parents when their children obey them, how much more must it please the Lord when His children obey Him? • Obedience is very important Acts 9:6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." 1 Samuel 15:22 So Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 1 John 2:5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. • Brothers obedience is something that I will to give to God everyday, and not when is convenience to “me” Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. • Well pleasing unto God!

  13. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 6. We must have faith in God. • Hebrews 11:6 • we are told that unless we have confidence in God we cannot please Him. Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. • Thank God, we can trust Him – not only for forgiveness Psalm 34:10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. • but for food • Not only for Salvation. • But for the supply of our every need

  14. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 7. We must be large-hearted. • Hebrews 13:16 • One translation renders this: “Don’t forget to be kind and liberal” • full of love, sympathy, understanding, readiness to help, encouragement, unselfishness Galatians 6:6 Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Hebrews 13:16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Romans 12:13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. This is the successful Christian life in action! This is my Aim: To be “well pleasing unto my Lord”

  15. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF PLEASING GOD? The most wonderful result is that if we make it our ambition to please Him, we shall have His smile upon our life The Lord Jesus is the Son of God in an unique sense; but every Christian is a son of God through faith in Him (Gal 3:26). Matthew 3:17And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. John 8:29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him." How wonderful to have God’s smile upon our life! There are three practical results of pleasing God:

  16. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 8. Answers to prayer. • 1 John 3:21-22 • And notice why we are so sure that God will hear and answer our prayer. • Notice also the word “whatever”, for this covers all our needs. • This promise is very challenging, for it not only tells us the way to get our prayer answered, but it explains why some of our prayers are not answered! 1 John 3:21-22 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. [22] And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

  17. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 9. Enemies at peace. Romans 12:17-21 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. [18] If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. [19] Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. [20] Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." [21] Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. • There is a wonderful promise in Proverbs 16:7; and note again that the blessing promised is conditional upon our being well-pleasing in His sight • It may well be that in the matter of human relationships you need to prove the Lord on these verses! Proverbs 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. • We have to let the Word of Christ to work in our LIVES!

  18. 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. MAKING IT OUR AMBITION TO PLEASE HIM 10. Special overcoming power. In Ecclesiastes 7:26… A special temptation is referred to; but if deliverance is promised from this evil, surely it is promised from every evil The point is, when we are doing what is pleasing to God, nothing can hurt us: Why? God himself, will give the way of Escape! 2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen! Ecclesiastes 7:26 And I find more bitter than death The woman whose heart is snares and nets, Whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God shall escape from her, But the sinner shall be trapped by her. Nothing will be impossible, if I am pleasing God everyday in my life!

  19. WHAT ARE THE MOTIVES WHICH SHOULD CONSTRAIN US TO PLEASE HIM? • Even the Lord did not please Himself (Romans 15:3). • Only thus can we glorify Him (1 Corinthians 10:31). • The Judgment Seat of Christ (Romans 14:10; 1 Cor 3:13). 1 Corinthians 3:13 each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. Romans 14:10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Romans 15:3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me."
