  2. Foreign Policy • Arms Race • Reagan believed that he could outspend the USSR. • Reagan spent 1.5 Trillion on defense SDI ( Star Wars): orbiting satellites that in theory shot down missiles

Central America • US continued to support repressive governments • El Salvador: promoted “democratic” elections to stop communist guerillas • Grenada: Regan invaded the small island in 1983 to oust communist. • Nicaragua: Communist (Sandinistas) overthrew Somoza. Contras (right wing) moved to oust Sandinista. US congress refused to help Contras. • Iran-Contra Scandal: US sold weapons to Iran and gave the money to Contras. Oliver North took the blame. • Regan testified but was never prosecuted.

  4. Cold War • Gorbachev became premier of USSR • Pro Peace • He wanted to end the Cold War and transition the USSR into Democracy and capitalism • 1988 George Bush is elected president.
