  7. EGNOS Latest Improvements (I/II) Increased service area and improved service robustness in border areas • New EGNOS System Release V2.3.1p was deployed in February-March 2012 with: • GEO Swap (22/3/12): INMARSAT satellite 4F2 (PRN 126) replaced ARTEMIS satellite (PRN 124), thus improving the visibility over the North ECAC area • New reference stations: La Palma (Spain) and Alexandria (Egypt). Athens (Greece) to be deployed in the short term • Improvement in EGNOS functions (iono monitoring) • MT9/MT17 coherency guaranteed • More GPS satellites used by EGNOS (GPS block IIF) ICAO PBN TF7

  8. EGNOS Latest Improvements (II/II) • Actual performance obtained on a typical day… ICAO PBN TF7

  9. GEO Swap (I/II) The visibility in the North is improved with the inclusion of PRN126: ARTEMIS satellite (PRN 124) INMARSAT satellite 4F2 (PRN 126) Visibility circles on the 26/10/2011. Solid line = 0° elevation, dotted line =5° elevation ICAO PBN TF7

  10. GEO Swap (II/II) 3 EGNOS GeostationarySatellites PRN120Inmarsat AOR-E PRN124 ESA Artemis PRN126 Inmarsat IOR-W • EGNOS OPS: PRN120 and PRN126 broadcast EGNOS messages to provide the SIS that is actually used by the EGNOS aviation user • EGNOS TEST:PRN124 is used by industry for EGNOS System Releases tests and operators training and qualification • GEO SWAP: PRN124 replaced by PRN126 in OPS end of March 2012 ICAO PBN TF7

  11. EGNOS future improvements APV-I target service area 2014 • ESR V2.3.1i: Summer 2012. • The Industry is working in the development of a new EGNOS system release more robust to ionospheric disturbances. • It is expected that this new release will be deployed in Summer 2012. • ESR V2.3.2 and V2.4.x: 2013-2014 • Improvement of Ionospheric monitoring • LPV-200 service • Addition of new RIMS (up to 40) • Next generation infrastructure (New GEOs, improved comm network, etc.) • APV I target Service Area in 2014… ICAO PBN TF7

  14. EGNOS SoL Service Issues ICAO PBN TF7

  15. EGNOS SoL Service (I/III) • EGNOS SoL Service Definition Document (SDD) describing the characteristics and conditions of access to the service. Published on the 2nd March 2011 New version of SoL SDD planned for summer 2012 http://www.essp-sas.eu/service_definition_documents • EGNOS Service Notices generated whenever there is any complementary information to be provided to users that could affect the any SDD contents. http://www.essp-sas.eu/service_notices ICAO PBN TF7

  16. EGNOS SoL Service (II/III) • A new SoL SDD will be published this summer ICAO PBN TF7

  17. Service Notices are available at ESSP website: www.essp-sas.eu/service_notices Service Notices published so far: Service Notice #1: MT9-MT17 Status (NOT APPLICABLE after deployment of ESR2.3.1P) Service Notice #2: Status of EGNOS performances (updated in April 2012!) Service Notice #3: EGNOS upgrades deployed in Q1 of 2012 (updated in April 2012!) Service Notice #4: Published in May 2012, related to the potential Service unavailability due to new Leap Second in June (updated on the 30/06/2012!). EGNOS SoL Service (III/III) ICAO PBN TF7

  18. EGNOS SoL Service Degradation (SN#2) • Investigations showed that it was related to: • Several NANUs on GPS SVs together with new generation GPS satellites (GPS-IIF) out of the EGNOS mask lowering the number of satellites available. • Solar activity increase degrading the ionospheric monitoring capability of the system. • SoL Service degradationsince Sept 2011 affecting APV-I availability mainly in SW and N of Service Area but: • Not compromising integrity at any moment • Not affecting OS users • Not affecting NPA users • Limited impact in published LPV procedures ICAO PBN TF7

  19. EGNOS SoL Service Degradation (SN#2) • Mitigation actions applied • Issue given highest priority by ESSP, EC, ESA and industry. • EGNOS mask updated in February 2012 to include GPS-IIF SVs (PRN1&25) plus PRN27 • Operational workaround applied • ESR231p in February 2012 already correcting some iono related issues and improving robustness thanks to additional RIMS ICAO PBN TF7

  20. EGNOS SoL Service Degradation (SN#2) • Service Degradation Current Status: • Contingency situation not existing anymore • EGNOS performance back to nominal levels since May mainly due to: • Effectiveness of Operational Work Around • ESR231p improvements (iono robustness, new RIMS and new GPS satellites Block IIF) • Moderation of solar activity • Additional robustness against iono activity is expected by August 2012 with ESR231i ICAO PBN TF7

  21. Leap Second introduction (SN#4) International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) add a leap second to the UTC, when required, in order to align this reference with the Mean Solar Time The process to manage the introduction of a new leap second in EGNOS was concluded that could imply an EGNOS service (OS and SoL) unavailability during a period of 72 hoursstarting from July the 1st at 00:00:00 CET. SN #4 was published to inform on this planned service outage. EWA specific communications issued and NOTAMs generated to inform final users accordingly No service outage was finally caused. SN #4 updated on 30/06/12 accordingly. All related NOTAMs were cancelled ICAO PBN TF7
