  5. What is Skype • A “free” program that allows you to connect over the Internet, so you can call by video or audio, message, and share with others. • A few exceptions to “free” we’ll talk about later

Vocabulary (cont.) • URL (uniform resource locator): it’s a web address (http://www.skype.com) • Texting: sending a short text-only message (usually from a phone) • SMS (short message service): the feature on your phone that lets you send texts. • http (hypertext transfer protocol): “http://” or “https://” goes in front of a web address [s means ‘secure’]

What You Need for Skype • A computer • With video camera built in, or a separate web-cam you attach. • A microphone built in, or a separate microphone (if the webcam doesn’t have a microphone in it) • Access to the Internet • An email account • Skype (the program) installed on your computer • A mouse • Maybe a headset with microphone
