What is the New York Natural Heritage Program? “Our mission is to facilitate conservation of New York's biodiversity by providing comprehensive information and scientific expertise on rare species and natural ecosystems to resource managers and other conservation partners.” “The NY Natural Heritage Program is a partnership between the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.” nynhp.org
What is the New York Natural Heritage Program? “Monitor 179 natural community types, 802 rare plant species, and 466 rare animal species across New York, keeping track of more than 12,800 locations where these species and communities are found.” • 27 staff, primarily biologists • Part of a network of other Heritage Programs in each of the 50 states, most Canadian provinces, and several countries in Latin America and South America. nynhp.org
What is the New York Natural Heritage Program? • Data ‘rolls-up’ from NYNHP databases into NatureServe databases, enabling cross-jurisdictional species Conservation Status Rankings • “For species these ranks provide an estimate of extinction risk, while for ecosystems they provide an estimate of the risk of elimination.”-- NatureServe Explorer • “Conservation status ranks are based on a one to five scale, ranging from critically imperiled (G1) to demonstrably secure (G5). Status is assessed and documented at three distinct geographic scales-global (G), national (N), and subnational (S).”-- NatureServe Explorer nynhp.org

What Does This Have To Do With Invasive Species?? “The introduction of alien species is second only to habitat destruction as the leading cause of extinctions worldwide.” — E.O. Wilson (?) “Invasive species are one of the leading threats to biodiversity.” — DJ Evans, NYNHP Director iMapInvasives.org
What is the Connection Between WISPA and the New York Natural Heritage Program? • NY iMapInvasives managed by NYNHP as the NY Invasive Species Database project (ISDB) • WISPA is essentially an invasive species database • WISPA and ISDB coordinated by NYSDEC Invasive Species Coordination Unit
Benefits of Standardized Data • Paper forms replaced with tablets • Data sent to the cloud nightly • Program Coordinators can review data nightly in online interface • Ability to view the statewide data real-time • Better analysis of NYS information • Additional resource!
