Aztec Empire During the Mesoamerican period, the Aztecs controlled all the way from Mexico and Guatemala to the territories of Salvador and Honduras for nearly 100 years during the same time as the Inca civilization. Sacrificicial Ritual. When the Aztecs defeated the Tepanecs, their reign began in 1427, after the leader, Itzcoatl, with the assistance of surrounding cities gained control of the Mexican river basin.

3. Toltec Empire After a long period, that lasted approximately one and a half millenniums, the ethnically uniform Mesoamerican Culture diversified itself. Then to the beginning of our era the Mayan culture began to take shape. A piece of Toltec art. Before the Mayan Civilization there was the Toltec Empire. appeared in the Central Mexico area in the 10th century AD, when they established their central city of Tula. It is believed that the Toltecs were refugees from the northern Teotihuacan culture and migrated after its fall in 700 AD.

4. The Mayan civilization is divided into three time periods which engulfed 3,000 years. The first is the Pre-Classic Period spanning from 2000 B.C.-250 A.D. The second is the Classic Period which spanned from 250 A.D.-900 A.D. The third is the Post-Classic Period which spanned from 900 A.D.- 1500 A.D. The Maya lived in the eastern one third of Mesoamerica, mainly on the Yucatan Peninsula . The best known group of Maya are the Maya Proper. The Maya Proper generally occupied the Yucatan. There are other groups of Maya such as the Huastec, who occupied northern Veracruz; the Tzental who occupied Tabascoand Chiapas and the Quiche; and the Cakchiquel and the Pokomam who occupied the Highlands of Guatemala. The Mayan calendar is due to end on Dec 12, 2012. Some say that this is the end of time.
