CPW 16 • Learning Intentions - Today, I am going to address these College Readiness Standards in Science: • Interpretation of Data – 16-19 • Scientific Investigation – 24-27 • Scientific Investigation – 24-27 • Interpretation of Data – 16-19 • Interpretation of Data – 20-23 • Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results – 24-27 SQUADS #4 “9th Grade Science” • Success Criteria –I will know I am successful when I can find basic information in a brief body of text, determine the experimental conditions that would produce specified results, predict the results of an additional trial or measurement in an experiment, understand basic scientific terminology, select data from a complex data presentation, and select a data presentation that supports a prediction.
Quick Note! • Today’s question are based on the printed passage you will receive. After reading your passage individually or as a group, choose the best answer to each question. You may refer to the passages as often as necessary. • You have 3 Minutes to read your passage! ACT Tip - The most important thing you should know about the ACT Science Test is that it is not a science test, but instead a REASONING test. It is designed to test your ability to understand and learn scientific material.
9th Grade Science #1. Which group contains parent cats that may be pure for not having white paws? • Group 1 • Group 2 • Group 3 • None of the groups
9th Grade Science #2. Describe the most likely genetic makeup of the parents in Group 1. F. The cats were both pure for not having white paws. G. One cat was pure, while the other cat was a carrier for the white paw trait. H. Both cats were carriers for the white paw trait. J. It cannot be determined.
9th Grade Science #3. If the cats from Group 1 were to continue breeding: • the number of white-pawed cats would eventually outnumber the cats without white paws. • the number of white-pawed cats would decline until no more white-pawed cats existed. • the number of cats without white paws would decline until no more cats without white paws existed. • the number of white-pawed cats would decline over time, but white-pawed cats would still be found in newer generations.
9th Grade Science #4. If a gene is recessive: F. it will only be expressed in the phenotype when two recessives are present in the genetic makeup of that organism. G. it will never be expressed in the phenotype. H. it will only be expressed in the phenotype when a dominant and a recessive gene is present in the genetic makeup of that organism. J. it will always be expressed in the phenotype.
9th Grade Science #5. How many of the six cats are pure for not having white paws? • 2 • 3 • 4 • 5
9th Grade Science • What would the Punnett Square look like for 2 homozygote white-pawed cats?
