  1. W(→eν)+jets Kira Grogg UW-Madison 23 September, 2009 K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  2. Analysis Plan • Now – Mid October • Write up 2_2_X note • Check out and try out inclusive EWK package • Mid October – Mid November • Keep current electron selection and focus on jet studies • Mid November – Beginning December • Revisit lepton and W selection • December – Winter Break • Document Fall 2009 progress • January • Background studies, numbers and shapes • February – April • Systematic studies, real data! K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  3. Action Items • Document 1D fitting example • In progress, will make available soon • Use Z→ee sample to create mT template • In progress • Need better adjustment for mass/kinematic differences • 2D Fit to discriminate against ttbar • HT, MET, ∆Φ K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  4. Ersatz MET method • Current method (needs some verification) • Randomly select an electron to be considered as a neutrino • Require other electron to pass ID and Isolation cuts • Add “neutrino” to the missing energy vector in the event • Boost both electron and “neutrino” into the rest frame of the Z • Scale momentum by MW / MZ • Boost back into “lab” frame • Require electron to pass pT cut • Other methods to use/include • Add in a shift to the distribution using gaussian fits near the peak • Simple MW / MZ scaling • Correction for limiting “neutrino” to |η| < 2.5 • Electron used for “neutrino” is limit to this η K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  5. Creating MET and W mT from Z→ee 1 jet sample W sample Z sample 0 jet events MET, 0 jet events Need to correct for W - Z mass difference 1 jet events K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  6. MET and W mT from Z→ee 0 jet sample, adjusted Zero jet sample has good agreement for MET, and good shape for mT W sample Z sample Z sample has been corrected for W vs Z mass difference K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  7. MET and W mT from Z→ee 1 jet sample, adjusted Events with jets do not have great agreement for MET W sample Z sample Z sample has been corrected for W vs Z mass difference May still need some adjustment to improve agreement K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  8. Conclusions/Next steps • Started documenting basic fitting • Beginnings of using Z→ee sample to create W mT template (for a data driven method) • Events with jets need some work • Currently working on: • Improvements to Z→ee template • Need to adjust properly for mass differences • Will revisit in Januray • Writing note for 2_2_X K. Grogg, UW-Madison

  9. Backup K. Grogg, UW-Madison
