What tonnage will I use? • International Tonnage ITC unless vessel qualifies (1984 > 500 ITC and 1994 >1600 ITC) and request from administration to use GRT on international voyages. • NVIC 11-93 gives guidance on how to apply the tonnage measurement and for exemptions for the regulations that were in place at that time. • Regulations which the Domestic tonnage does not apply. • International Safety Management (ISM) • Long Range Identification and Targeting (LRIT) • MARPOL Annex VI (Air Pollution) • STCW • ISPS (Security) • Any SOLAS regulations which may come into effect in the future.
What Regulations Apply To My Vessel? • ALL Vessels- Your Manning must match your ITC Tonnage • Vessels >300 ITC (Safety Radio Certificate) SOLAS Chapter V-Communications GMDSS • Vessels >400 ITC MARPOL (IOPP, IAPP, Garbage, VRP) • Vessels >500 ITC All of SOLAS (Safe Manning Document, ISSC, ISM, Safety Equipment, Safety Construction)
What’s the Bottom Line? If you think you want to make a foreign voyage, call the Coast Guard now to see what will be required of your vessel. Don’t wait until you get a contract or after you are in another country to figure it out. Thank You
