Definition of leadership • Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. • Good leaders are born and also can be made. If you have the desire and will power, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience.

Different aspects of leadership • I am not scared of 100 lions led by a sheep but I will be scared of 100 sheep led by a lion – Sir Winston Churchil • This has been proved by the Great Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji, who single handedly took on the Mighty moghuls and succeeded in establishing Maratha kingdom which later became the Maratha empire under the stewardship of Peshwa Bajirao, The First.

  5. Different aspects of leadership • Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills. Although your position as a manager, supervisor etc. gives you the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives in the organization, this power does not make you a leader. It simply makes you the boss. Leadership differs in that it makes the followers want to achieve high goals, rather than simply bossing people around.

  6. Different aspects of leadership • The basis of good leadership is honorable character and selfless service to your organization. In your employees' eyes, your leadership is everything you do that effects the organization's objectives and their well being. Respected leaders concentrate on what they are [be] (such as beliefs and character), what they know (such as job, tasks, and human nature), and what they do (such as implementing, motivating, and provide direction).

Different aspects of leadership • Trust and confidence in top leadership is the single most reliable predictor of employee satisfaction in an organization. • Effective communication by leadership in three critical areas is the key to winning organizational trust and confidence: • Helping employees understand the company's overall business strategy. • Helping employees understand how they contribute to achieving key business objectives. • Sharing information with employees on both how the company is doing and how an employee's own division is doing - relative to strategic business objectives.

  8. Changes in Role of Master • Master was considered as demigod and his word was final and Companies had a policy of treating master as an institution. • Rapid Industrial development. • Indians replacing Europeans. • Acute shortage of trained and experienced seafarers.

  9. Changes in Role of Master • Mixed manning concept. • Role of Master from the days of Titanic. • Case study – Case of weather routing. • Master is Master of ship but slave of circumstances.

Challenges • Reduction in manpower • Loneliness at sea • Increased pressure from ship owners, charterers, regulatory regime. • Substandard ships • Criminalization of seafarers • Floating population of officers and crew • Changing size and technology • Increased stringent rules and regulations • Lack of support when it is needed • ISM systems (sometimes helpful)

If masters are interested in changing their position as a soft option, then they will have to be • Proficient in their knowledge. • Have organizational support. • Give suggestions to improve the system. • Do not lie back singing laurels of success of the past. • Make proper representation about the difficulties.

  12. To be effective Leader • BE KNOW DO • BE a professional. Examples: Be loyal to the organization, perform selfless service, take personal responsibility. • BE a professional who possesses good character traits. Examples: Honesty, competence, candor, commitment, integrity, courage, straightforwardness, imagination. • KNOW the four factors of leadership - follower, leader, communication, situation. • KNOW yourself. Examples: strengths and weakness of your character, knowledge, and skills. • KNOW human nature. Examples: Human needs, emotions, and how people respond to stress.

  13. To be effective Leader • KNOW your job. Examples: be proficient and be able to train others in their tasks. • KNOW your organization. Examples: where to go for help, its climate and culture, who the unofficial leaders are. • DO provide direction. Examples: goal setting, problem solving, decision making, planning. • DO implement. Examples: communicating, coordinating, supervising, evaluating. • DO motivate. Examples: develop morals and spirit in the organization, train, coach, counsel.
