Ethics • What are they? • The morals that people use to make decisions and guide their lives. • Why different ethics? • One theory is that there is no universal truth, only beliefs, perspectives, and values • Many people believe in situational ethincs • Some are based off of religious traditions such as Judeo-Christian ethics • What about having no ethics? • When people behave out side of an ethical system they are behaving a morally.
Personal Ethics • What are they? • The morals you use to make decisions all day everyday • How do they develop? • Family Life • Teachers • Church/Religion/Culture • Life Experiences
Discover Your Personal Ethics • Describe yourself-What words would a friend use to describe you • List your beliefs- All the beliefs that influence your decision making • Identify external influences- Relationships at work or home that affect your decisions • Why?- Why do you have the beliefs you do? • Prepare a statement of values- Condense it all down.
Personal Ethics in the World • When you enter the work force the ethics of your corporation are the ethics you follow at work. BUT peoples personal ethics do influence how they interpret the ethics of the corporation. • Your employer does have an effect on your personal ethics outside of the workplace-after all, your actions reflect back on your employer.
Technology and Ethics • Technology is growing faster than rules can regulate it, so it is left up to people’s personal ethics as to how they use technology. • Ethical issues in technology are: • Social justice • Intellectual property • Privacy • E-commerce • Electronic communication • Computer abuse • Supporting Ethical conduct • Using the Web to raise funds, such as the Red Cross when Katrina struck • Businesses are using different technological advances to increase ethics in their employees, such as intranets and email to let people know their ethical policies.
