VDL Mode 2 Program 2001 Development Activities • ATN • PETAL • Software test near completion and fielded within the next 30 days • end-to-end CPDLC message delivery proven over the RF • AA 767 w/Collins CMU/ARINC ATN network/Maastricht • 5 of 6 Ground stations deployed in Europe • 2 AGRMs deployed in Europe • ATN routers deployed • Engineering network operations center established • PETAL aircraft certification • Two AGTS’s deployed and operational at Dallas-Fort Worth and Tulsa • Aircraft certification underway • PETAL operational from May through October ‘01
VDL Mode 2 Program 2001 Development Activities • ATN • Deployment Activities for Miami Airspace • Coverage requirements defined with FAA and American Airlines • Ground Stations fielded as part of AOA deployment in 2001 and early 2002 • additional Florida and Caribbean sites required • ATN Service Operational in December ‘01 • Will support CPDLC Build I and AOC needs • ATN initially cut-over to limited geographical area • Expansion to operational service cloud in Florida in early ‘02
GLOBAL ink ARINC VDL Mode 2 2001 Deployment Activities
VDL Mode 2 Service and Ground Station Roll-Out • Initial Operational Capability Established • 2001 Deployment Activities Encompasses: • Installing over 80 VDL retrofit kits for currently deployed VDL-capable ground stations • Beginning deployment of over 90 new ACARS/VDL operational ground stations • Over 20 retrofit kits fabricated to date • Deploying Air/Ground Routers/Regional Managers (AGRMs) • Establishing VDL Mode 2 ATN IOC capability • 2001 Deployment Coverage • Continental US focus is en-route cloud and CPDLC coverage • Europe focus is cloud to support Airbus VDL production certification
VDL Mode 2Service and Ground Station Roll-Out • VDL Ground Station Deployment Approach • Long lead parts ordered and fabrication underway • Operational testing underway to ensure smooth implementation (especially at high volume “critical” airports) • Begin deployment at @ 20 ground stations per month in 2Q01 with the following focus: • VDL kits for already deployed VDL-upgradeable ground stations • New VDL ground stations for Miami airspace and to fill in holes in en-route VDL coverage
Representative Planned Operational Coverage Currently Deployed VDL-Capable Ground Stations
Summary • One Big Milestone Accomplished and Several To Go in 2001 • VDL Mode 2 Is Reality Now • The Focus of 2001 is: • PETAL • Deploying VDL Mode 2 ATN capability for AOC and CPDLC • Expanding VDL Mode 2 Coverage • Continuing to Work with Industry for VDL Mode 2 Air/Ground Interoperability
