Core 40Graduation Requirements In order to graduate from Southport High School, a student must meet the following requirements:
English 9 credits * Mathematics 6 credits ** Science 6 credits *** Social Studies 6 credits **** Physical Education 2 credits Health 1 credit Preparing for College/Career1 credit Electives 9 credits Pass English and Math State Exams >>>>>>> TOTAL 40 credits <<<<<<< English, nine (9) credits will include English 9 a/b; English 10 a/b; English 11 a/b; English 12 a/b. The one remaining credit will be Speech. ** Math, six (6) credits will include Algebra I a/b; Geometry a/b; Algebra II a/b. Must take Math every year in high school!! *** Science, six (6) credits will include Biology a/b; Chemistry a/b or Physics a/b or Integrated Chemistry-Physics a/b; and two additional science credits. **** Social Studies, six (6) credits will include World History a/b or Geography/History of the World a/b; US History a/b; Government and Economics.
Core 40 withAcademic Honors Diploma The Academic Honors Diploma is awarded to qualifying students graduating from Southport High School. To receive an Academic Honors Diploma, a student must earn forty-seven (47) credits and meet the following requirements:
English - nine (9) credits of English 9 a/b; 10 a/b; 11a/b; and 12 a/b. The one (1) remaining credit is Speech. Mathematics – eight (8) credits must include Algebra I a/b; Algebra II a/b; Geometry a/b; and two (2) additional higher level classes. (Must take every year) Science - six (6) credits must include two (2) credits in Biology a/b; two (2) credits in Chemistry a/b, or Physics a/b, or Integrated Chemistry-Physics; and two (2) additional science credits. Social Studies - six (6) credits must include two (2) credits from U.S. History a/b; one (1) credit from Government; one (1) credit from Economics; and two (2) credits from World History a/b or Geography/History of the World a/b. World Language - six (6) credits in one language or four (4) credits each in two languages. Fine Arts - two (2) credits in Art or Music. Core 40 withAcademic Honors Diploma Requirements
Health – one (1) credit. Beginning Physical Education – two (2) credits. Must complete one (1) of the following: Complete two AP courses (4 credits) and corresponding AP exams. Complete two dual credit courses resulting in six (6) college credits. Complete a combination of one AP course (2 credits) and corresponding AP exams and one dual credit course resulting in three (3) college credits. Score 1750 or higher combined on the SAT critical reading, mathematicsand writing sections with a minimum score of 530 on each. Score a 26 or higher composite on the ACT with completion of the writing section. No grade lower than "C-" may count toward the diploma and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher must be earned. Core 40 with Technical Honors Diploma • The Technical Honors Diploma is awarded to qualifying students graduating from Southport High School. • To receive a Technical Honors Diploma, a student must earn forty-seven (47) credits and meet the following requirements:

Earn the following minimum score(s) on Accuplacer: Writing 80, Reading 90, Math 75. D. Earn the following minimum score(s) on Compass; Algebra 66, Writing 70, Reading 80. • No grade lower than "C-" may count toward the diploma and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher must be maintained. • Students interested in earning a Technical Honors Diploma should express desire to their counselor when preparing each year’s schedule.
