Where will I ever see Scientific Notation? • In your science textbook you read the following: “The speed of light is 5.89248 × 1010 feet per minute.” What does this mean? Is that really fast or really slow?
41.5268× 100 = 41.5268× 101 = 41.5268× 102 = 41.5268× 103 = 41.5268× 104 = 41.5268× 105 = 41.5268 × 1 = 41.5268 × 10 = 41.5268× 100 = 41.5268× 1,000 = 41.5268× 10,000 = 41.5268× 100,000 = Find the following solutions…As you’re working can you find a pattern? 41.5268 415.268 4,152.68 41,526.8 415,268. 4,152,680. Do you see any trends in how these products are increasing?
Can you make rule describing how to multiply by a power of 10? • Rule: The exponent tells us how many places to move the decimal point (to the right). • For example: 7.639 × 107 means 7.639 × 10,000,000 OR just think: Move the decimal 7 places to the right! 76390000000 = 76,390,000 (Remember that: 7.639 = 7.63900000000000…) .
Where do you find a decimal point for a whole number? • To the right of the one’s digit. • (All the way at the end of the number) • So 38 is really: 38.0000000000000000000…
Practice multiplying by a Power of 10: 3,230 • a. 3.23 × 103 = ________________ • b. 436 × 105 = ________________ • c. 4.565 × 108 = ________________ • d. 8 × 102 = ________________ • e. 0.393 × 103 = ________________ • f. 0.0034 × 109 = ________________ 43,600,000 456,500,000 800 393 3,400,000
What is scientific notation? • Method for writing really big numbers so that they are easier to read. • Often used in science books and other scientific journals. • The product of two numbers: • A number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10. • And a power of 10. • In general numbers in Scientific Notation will look like: (1 – 10) × 10?
Think of Scientific Notation as if… • You are given the solution and you have to think of the multiplication problem using a power of 10 that would give you that particular product. • Practice: • 290 = ___________ • 3,482 = __________ • 59,777 = __________ 2.9 × 102 3.482 × 103 5.9777 × 104
