Master Bathrooms: Surface Materials Accent Walls in White Backdrop with Bathroom Vanity Optimization for Two Master bathroom fixtures renovators are creating spaces that are outfitted for two, according to the Bathroom Trends Study,* which found that double sinks are on the rise (69% in 2019, up from 66% in 2018) among those who updated their sinks. Undermount sinks are the clear favorite (64%), followed by drop-in (16%) and vessel (11%).

  2. To match this set up, more than half of those replacing their mirrors during master bathroom renovations are installing two (54%). A surprising 7% opt for three or more mirrors in their master bath! However, master showers are increasingly set up for one, with dual showerheads declining slightly from 28% in 2018 to 23% in 2019. Medicine cabinets are also having a moment. Among the 31% of renovating homeowners upgrading their medicine cabinets, two in five install a custom or semi-custom cabinet (40%). Many are opting for premium features like mirrors on the inside (34%), lighting on the outside (18%) and inside (13%), hidden plugs (17%) and anti-fog systems (12%).

  3. When it comes to style, master bathrooms vanity are seeing a significant shift. Among the 89% of homeowners who change their master bathroom style during a renovation, transitional and modern styles are gaining popularity, both increasing to 21% and 20% in 2019, respectively (each up five percentage points from 2018). Contemporary style fell from 23% in 2017 to 16% in 2019 and traditional from 14% in 2018 to 9% in 2019. Farmhouse style peaked in 2018 at 7%, but fell by nearly half in 2019 to just 4%.

During master bathroom renovations, many homeowners are opting for light, bright spaces with white as the top choice freestanding bathtub for countertops (51%), shower walls (45%), vanities (34%), and walls outside the shower (32%) according to the 2020 U.S. Buildmyplace Bathroom Trends Study*. Surprisingly, among the more than one third of homeowners adding an accent wall in their renovated space (37%), white remains the top pick (23%), followed closely by gray (21%) and blue, which is on the rise (19% in 2020, up from 16% in 2019). With neutral colour palettes popular in updated bathrooms, renovating homeowners employ other methods to help their accent walls stand out. Surface material is the most common

  5. choice for distinguishing an accent wall (51%), up seven percent from last year. Other features that help the walls pop include colour (45%), pattern (41%) and texture (28%). Accent walls are slightly more common outside the shower area (19% in 2020, up from 15% in 2019), than inside the shower area (18%). The majority of homeowners replace wall finishes and flooring outside of the shower during master bathroom renovations (83%, each). Paint is by far the leading option for non- shower walls (77%), followed by ceramic or porcelain (26%) and wood (7%). For flooring outside the shower, ceramic or porcelain tops the list (59%), followed by vinyl or resilient flooring, which jumped four percent from last year (11% in 2020, up from 7% in 2019).
