  1. Inspiring Communities Carlisle Partnership Children and Young People’s Group

  2. The Opportunity • £450,000 over two years (2009/10 – 2010/11). • Focus on a Lower super output area (LSOA) in the district. • The focus was on 11 – 14 year olds “when young people move from idealistic to more realistic ambitions.”

  3. The Bid • In for the 3rd June. • Specific activities and costs (The 4 core aims). • Identify an active community leader to front the bid. • Identify a super output area (4 to choose from in Carlisle). • The bid must be an excellent example of “ambitious and creative” partnership working.

  4. First Priority • Identify a campaign leader. • A senior local authority sponsor. • Approach the leadership of secondary schools serving the neighbourhood. • Approach one OR MORE third sector organisation. • Identify an accountable body.

  5. Important to show....... • Commitment to ambitious and creative partnership working and linking in to existing activities and priorities. • Strong local leadership and community engagement. • Commitment to share innovation and learning and mainstream work. • Involvement of local leaders.

  6. Considerations • Applications were for an Inspiring Communities campaign to be funded in a single neighbourhood. • Between 5 and 10,000 people. • Large enough to support strong partnership working with wide buy-in, yet small enough to retain strong recognised local identity.

  7. Considerations cont... • Low GCSE Attainment. • Low take up of HE. • FSM. • School absence. • Schools involvement. • 3rd sector involvement. • Young people’s wishes and views?

  8. Close but not close enough. • The bid was initially submitted to the Childrens Trust for assessment. • The bid came second to a Furness bid in a tough group of five. • We wish them every success.

  9. Carlisle Partnership moving forward • More positive links made with the community and the resources and opportunities available. • An in road into the good work that we need to do (also some of the work that's taking place). • Opportunity for greater scope in the delivery. (11- 14’S?) • An enthusiastic response from local head teachers and community leaders.

  10. Cont.... • The work of the Living Well Trust and a useful link made with them strengthening the CYP group. • A useful link made with Brathay again strengthening the membership of the CYP group. • A willingness from the youthzone to get involved. • Confirmation that the ideas in the Carlisle bid were innovative and exciting.

  11. The advantages of leaving the bid arena. • Not as time constrained. • Can tackle a greater/smaller area. • Can adapt a more inclusive approach. • More flexibility on what we want to achieve.
