Motivation • You are looking for patterns to help determine what might affect mileage for different models of automobiles sold in the US • You collect data for 233 models sold during 2003 and 2004 • You want to identify any cars with superior mileage and then determine their characteristics
Method • Use summary statistics (moment and order) to describe the distribution of horsepower • Use a histogram to describe the shape of the distribution • Use a boxplot to identify possible negative and positive outliers
Mechanics • Calculate the numerical statistics • Draw a histogram • Create a boxplot • Bring your findings back into Excel and Powerpoint

Message • Some cars have significantly more horsepower than others • The distribution of horsepower is positively skewed • The mean and the standard deviation could be strong influenced by the extremely large horsepower cars • The narrowness of the interquartile range suggests that many of the cars have very similar horsepower
