Why study abroad? • Academic challenge; variation of studio and lecture or seminar classes • Professional growth, experience of places seen in history classes -- the real thing for design • Personal enrichment; knowledge of self; foster self reliance and independence • Opportunity to appreciate other cultures and people • Broader perspective of the US and its roles in the world. • Fun

How to get started: • Go to the programs offered by CAPD and OIP • Talk to returning students • Talk to your academic advisor • Talk to the associate dean • Talk to members of the international studies committee • Talk to Kevin Spears in the Office of International Programs in Fairchild Hall 304

How to get started (continued): • Research your options so you will understand how your academic goals will be met by each program option • Read the facts about each location by going to the links on the CAPD webpage under “resources” • Read materials prepared by returning CAPD students, on the CAPD webpage under “resources” • Read program and course descriptions posted on the web by host institutions

  7. Initial considerations: • Money / cost • Financial aid (see Lucille Wiley in Student Financial Assistance) • Scholarships • Out-of-state students will pay in-state tuition for study abroad • No loss of fee waiver • Language proficiency / requirements • Academic standing (see your advisor)

  8. Credit hour considerations: • Italian Studies is already KSU credit • Other approved study abroad program credit is transferred to KSU and applied to program of study (your CAPD advisor is critical to this process) • Some study abroad program credit hours require validation prior to transfer of credit • Contact your advisor, department head or theassociate dean if you are considering a program that has not received prior approval by CAPD faculty

Credit hour considerations (continued): • Students who participate in approved study abroad programs will meet UGE requirements upon successful completion and transfer of study abroad course work • 3 to 6 hours of credit taken while on study abroad meets the requirement for 3 UGE credits (300+) • 7 or more hours of credit taken while on study abroad meets the requirement for 6 UGE credits(300+) • Students are still responsible for 3 or 6 credits of free electives which can be fulfilled by courses taken while on study abroad

  10. CAPD GPA considerations • If too low, you don’t go • 2.50 – 2.99, may apply but additional faculty and advisor references may be requested • Some programs have minimum GPA requirements. • Minimum gpa for students selected for study abroad for spring 2005 was 2.70

Application process for all CAPD students going abroad: • Prior to completing the CAPD study abroad application, visit with your academic advisor to determine if the program credit hours will meet KSU CAPD requirements • CAPD application form will require you to select and rank order up to three programs of choice; to state your academic reasons for selecting each program; to complete a self-evaluation form; and to submit two faculty references • Applications are due Tuesday, February 1, 2005 for students going abroad in 2006

Application process for all CAPD students going abroad (continued): • There is a non-refundable CAPD application fee of $30.00 • All applications will be reviewed by the CAPD ISC which will make recommendations, including rank ordering if necessary, to the associate dean • Application forms and detailed instructions will be available on the web or from Crystal Lara (Seaton 212) or Mary Rakowsky (Seaton 115) • Successful applicants, who accept a position in one of the programs, will be required to pay a $225 deposit which will be sent to OIP

  13. Application process for all students going abroad (continued): • Application forms are due by early October of the 4th yr. (2005) for all OIP-sponsored programs (all but Italian Studies) • OIP-sponsored programs require a $50.00 application fee and a $450 dollar program fee The $225 dollar deposit paid to CAPD is deducted from the total of the application and program fee
