Tales of the Way Things Were: Dante can’t help but glare at the souls floating by in the Danube River. • The souls could not open their eyes, because their eyelids were shut by ice. • The water resembles glass and is as cold as ice. • “The Danube where it flows in Austria, the Don beneath its frozen sky, have never made for their course so thick a veil in winter as there was here.” (pg.1933, 25)
Characters to Remember • Dante stepped on Bocca degli Abati’s (who betrayed his party at the battle of Montaperti) head not making him very happy. • The two sons of Count Alberto degli who killed each other over politics and their inheritance. • Sassol Mascheroni: A Florentine nobleman who murdered a relative. • Camiscion de’ Pazzi: a Florentine who killed his kinsman. • Beccheria: a Florence churchman executed for treason • Tebaldello: a citizen of Faenza who betrayed his town to its enemies.
