Impact of New NRMP Policies Daniel J. Lee, MD Emory University djlee5@emory.edu January 29, 2010
The NRMP Match • Originated in 1952 • Mechanism for candidates to secure training positions and for programs to secure trainees • 15K US allopathic seniors and 16K other applicants • 24K available positions
National Match Programs • Other match programs: • San Francisco Match • Urology Match • Military Match • Osteopathic Match • The NRMP Match remains the largest
The Match • Both candidates and programs submit Rank Order List • Like a lottery for an arranged marriage • Legally binding agreement between candidate and program • Failure to honor the Match is a violation • Only the NRMP can void a Match
New NRMP Policy • As of May 2009, all programs must check Applicant Match History • Establish eligibility of candidates • Violations of past Matches • US allopathic seniors exempted • Must check even if your program is not in Match • What’s at stake: violation may result in loss of your entire institution’s programs ability to participate in Match on either a temporary or permanent basis (NRMP Match Policy Section 9)
Intent of New Policy • Protect the integrity of the Match process • Only eligible candidates may enter into contract for residency • Violators of past Matches may not enter into contract with another program
How Do I Check the NRMP AMH? • If participating in the Match, online access available • Call your institutional NRMP official • e.g., DIO • Call NRMP at 1-866-617-5837 • Call NRMP Match Policy Director, Dr. Laurie Curtin at 202-862-6246 • Obtain print out to document applicant eligibility
Contacting Applicants • May discuss application status with applicants freely • May discuss interviews and recruitment only after checking AMH • May not contact candidates after ROL submission deadline, February 24, 2010
Contacting Applicants (2) • May offer a position to someone in the current year Match before the ROL deadline • The applicant would must withdraw from the Match before the ROL deadline and print out proof of withdrawal. • May not contact applicant between ROL deadline and announcement of Match results (12 noon Eastern, March 16, 2010)
Summary • New policy requires all training programs to check AMH for eligibility of serious candidates • Violation may result in dire consequences for your entire institution • Document your check with printout • If you want to recruit US allopathic senior, you MUST participate in NRMP Match • If you have questions, contact Dr. Laurie Curtin, Match Policy Director
