  1. 2019-20 Season Laker Cheerleading

  2. Welcome • Mission of PL Cheer: • Participation in PL cheer helps athletes grow, learn, and enjoy themselves. We aim to teach the pursuit of excellence through personal development and teamwork, ethical and responsible behavior on and off the mat, adherence to our behavioral standards, leadership, strength of character, sportsmanship- acceptance of victory with humility, and acknowledgement of defeat with grace.  We aim to instill habits which will lead athletes to better and healthier lives upon leaving our program.  While winning is not an end in itself, we believe the efforts by our athletes to be their best will lead them to success.

  3. Program Wide Communication • Sports NGIN App: more details on this from boosters later tonight • Email: be sure you have filled out info on one of the computers • We have a private facebook group for parents/guardians. PL Cheer Parent Guardians. Be sure to join this! We post a lot of reminders, photos, videos, etc on here. (This is NOT our public page). We are also on Instagram. JV and MS will be creating their own accounts as well. Be sure to follow all the teams on their journey this season. • GroupMe: for athletes/coaches • Varsity and JV will be primarily athlete to coach for details but parents will receive important info via email/sports engine.

  4. Spring Tumbling: Forms circulating • Pre-Season is KEY time to acquire new skills. Once we enter the fall season the focus is group timing and technique. Tumbling just once a week will not likely result in a huge development of new skills. We recommend at least two tumbling classes per week for maximum skill development in the pre-season. • Please sign up tonight to indicate which class your athlete will be taking. • Classic Gymnastics: currently mid-session. Only select this option IF you are already in this class. • School Tumbling with Bill. Cost 95.00. You can select as MANY sessions as you want! • Tuesday 3:30-5 or 5-6:30 • Thursday 3:30-5 or 5:30

  5. Summer Tumbling • Classes with Bill (schedule TBD). Waiting on gymnastics schedule. Classes will be at TOMS or HOMS. • Classic Gymnastics (Savage). 6/3-8/24. Cost 310.00 Registration for classic is NOW open. Please contact them to enroll in in class if you would like to tumble at Classic. • Wednesday • Advanced 4:30-5:30 • Beginner/IME 5:45-6:45 • Thursday: • Advanced 4:30-5:30 • Beginner/IME 5:45-6:45

  6. Laker Performance Summer • Laker Performance during the summer months of June and July is highly recommended. • Laker Performance is a strength and conditioning program run through PLHS and will help our athletes gain strength and stamina to compete at a high level and do so safely (reducing injuries). • The 7th grade thru 12th Grade Girls Session will meet from 7:00 am to 8:30 am M-Th during the months of June and July. • Register through PLHS: Lakerperformance.org

  7. Laker Perform. School Year (HS only) • Strength Training Classes • Whether in-season or off-season, student-athletes will have opportunities to take Strength Training classes as a PE Credit. • Strength Training classes provide a great opportunity for student-athletes to train during the school day. • Strength Training classes are a great option for student-athletes, particularly while in-seaso • ZERO Hour Hybrid - Strength Training • Students will also have the opportunity to take ZERO Hour Hybrid Strength Training. • This class will meet two to three times per week for workouts and also have the opportunity to develop personal workouts and track nutrition. • Many coaches are moving to morning training sessions, so students will have the option to also get PE credit for being at morning training sessions. • Student-athletes who take advantage of regular Strength Training Classes or ZERO Hour Strength Training will set themselves up for a comprehensive year-round training program

  8. Prior Lake Middle School • Coaches: Kat Stein, Peter Dring, Maddie Bills and Mariah Madsen • Communication Method: • Email • Sports Engine • Practice Schedule: • Spring/Summer: Monday 5-7:30 • Plus a minimum of one day of tumbling required. Athletes who compete at competitions will be at the sole discretion of coaching staff based on skills, stunt position and work ethic.

  10. Prior Lake JV Gameday • Coaches: Maddie Bills and Peter Dring • This team will compete at 10,000 Lakes Regionals @ Edina HS for a bid to NHSCC • Choreography 4:30-9:00 7/15 and 7/16 • Practices will start up in July 22nd Monday’s 6:30-8:00pm. • Optional for JV athletes, but must sign up so we know how the team is sitting numbers wise. 12. Alternates • Athletes are not competing against eachother for a spot on the competition mat. We are a team and our goal as coaches is to put together the best possible team to represent Prior Lake. Each person on the team plays a valuable role in the sucess • Alternates are not set in stone and can change at any point in the season at the coaches discretion based on new skills acquired, lack of progress, behavioral issues, attendance issues, etc.

  13. Alternates MAIN BASE GETS INJURED AND IS OUT FOR 6 WEEKS BACK (a) BACK MAIN SECOND (a) SECOND (a) MAIN Who do we replace them with? a. Does height/size work? b. What other portions of the routine does the main base do? c. Tumbling skills? TOP (a) TOP

  14. As a result of losing one person – Now the alternate group is down to 3 people and unable to do regular stunts. What can the alternates do now? 1. Fill in for spots when we need them for people who are sick or cannot be at practice (schedule conflicts). 2. Actively spot and work with other groups to stay involved. Staying close enough that when we give instruction to the group you can hear the correction and still learn stunting technique. BACK (a)BACK (a)MAIN SECOND (a) SECOND TOP (a)TOP

  15. Program Policies • Attendance (Please refer to full attendance policy in handbook). This is an over-view. • Is extremely important in cheer. Unlike other sports, missing one athlete can prevent an entire group from being able to stunt, impacts ability to practice pyramids, etc. • Excused Absences: • Must be communicated directly to your coach via email. • Two week notice for all absences (absent extenuating circumstances). • Expected to return to practice at the same level as your teammates and responsible for all routine changes that occurred during the absence. Unexcused Absences: Regular dental, orthodontist, doctor, other appointments, driving classes and work should be scheduled at other times and will NOT be excused. Please schedule these appointments on days we do not practice or before practice begins. While every situation may be different, the coach has the final say on what is unexcused. • 1st Offense: Loss of competition, game or coach’s discretion • 2nd Offense: Loss of letter, competition/game or coaches discretion. • 3rd Offense: Permanent removal from the team.

  16. Important Policies • Sickness or injury: If you are in school for the full day, you are expected to attend practice. If you leave school early due to illness/injury, you must notify the coach as soon as possible. If you are not in school, please notify your coach at the same time you call in to the school. If you are sick, your coach must receive an email from your parent stating the nature of the illness and you will be ineligible to practice that day. All injuries require a doctor’s note to your coach. If you do not have doctor or trainers note for an injury, you will be expected to attend practice or it will be considered unexcused. All sicknesses or injuries must be reported by parents to the coach. Athletes may not SELF REPORT. • Tardiness: MUST arrive to practice prior to practice start time to set out mats. Practice STARTS at the designated time… mats should be out by the start time. • If under 15 minutes late to practice; each minute late= conditioning at coaches discretion and you will be in change of music/signs and trash clean-up for up to a full week of practice. • If more then 15 minutes into practice; additional jumps and/or conditioning will be required based on coach’s discretion.

  17. Standards of Behavior • Dress in assigned practice clothes and cheer shoes. Be ready to go and stretched out a minimum of 5 minutes prior to practice start time, with mats out. No hoods, sweatshirts or zippered clothing during warmups. • No cell phone use during practice. Unauthorized cell phone use will result in team conditioning. We want our athletes to be device free and invested in their teammates. • Closed practices- not allowed unless coach opens practice for the day. We often host open practices during competition season and welcome visitors on those days! • Always respect your coaches and teammates. Disrespectful behavior to anyone in the program will not be tolerated on any level. • Our success is dependent upon athletes who exhibit a hard work ethic. Athletes will be expected to participate with complete effort. • PL cheer will not tolerate gossip of any kind from parents or athletes about coaches, other athletes or other parents. Failure to follow this standard can result in removal/suspension from the program. PL cheer will be a positive and supportive environment.

  18. Behavioral Standards Infractions • Consequences of Behavioral or Conduct Violations Any disciplinary action from the school or violation of the MSHSL rules and regulations will be carried out to the fullest, along with any additional consequences the coach decides. This includes not only drug/alcohol use but also your use of social media and your academic progress. You must keep your social media clean from any comments, photos, or videos that could be detrimental to the character of this program. We have high expectations for the cheerleaders both in and outside of cheer. You are a direct representation of your team, program and school. Having the opportunity to be a part of PL cheer is a privilege, NOT a right. Athletes who do not uphold proper behavioral standards will be subject to disciplinary action.

  19. Chemical Eligibility • We take chemical eligibility very seriously. Laker cheer expects all athletes to adhere to the highest standards. • Student shall not use or consume, have in possession, buy, sell, or give away tobacco, alcohol, other controlled substances, or drug paraphernalia. • Applies to 12 months a year.

  20. Chemical Violations • 1st Violation- 25% of the competitive season • As a team member during ineligibility, athlete must attend practices, meet team and coaches expectations, and complete the season. • Violation may result in loss of post season awards and honors. • 2nd violation- Ineligible for 50% of the competitive season. • As a team member during the ineligibility period, athlete must attend practices, meet team and coach expectations and complete the season. • 3rd Violation- Student will lose eligibility for one calendar year. • The athlete may choose to practice with the team.

  21. Communication • Communication Protocol: • Program wide communications will be sent via email. If you are not receiving emails, please contact your team parent so we can ensure your email address is correct. Please fill out the form with your preferred email address. At the Varsity level, much of the daily communication will be directly with athletes to help encourage a sense of maturity and responsibility. • Chain of Communication: Prior Lake Cheer adheres to the PLHS athletic chain of communication to encourage athletes to communicate concerns directly with their coach. Should the coach and athlete be unable to resolve the issue, the following chain of communication should take place (adhere to the 24 hour rule unless imminent danger exists): 1. Athlete and Coach 2. Athlete, Coach, Parent 3. Athlete, Coach, Parent, Program Director 4. Athlete, Coach, Parent Program Director and activities director. Prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child.

  22. I have a question… who do I ask? • Athletes: Captains are a great point of contact for athletes on questions regarding: practice times, meeting times, what to wear, etc. • Parents: if you have a question, comment or concern, please feel free to reach out to the team parent for questions on dates, timing, etc. and then coaches. If it’s related to an issue your athlete is experiencing, make sure the athlete has already addressed the issue with their coach. Our goal is to partner with you to develop strong athletes who have the courage and maturity to speak with adults regarding their concerns/feelings. • Our private group facebook page will not be the primary means for asking questions, getting information, etc. We will continue to use this to share fun practice videos, extra reminders as a courtesy, and any positive things going on in the program. Please feel free to email any questions (we don’t always see Facebook questions/don’t get alerts for it, etc) and want to make sure your questions are being addressed.

  23. Transportation • PLHS provides Transportation to & from most events • Athletes are required to ride the bus to events • Coaches will discuss process for riding home from a competition • You may not ride home from an event with anyone other than your parent. • Students may not drive to/from an event without prior approval from the parent, activities and coach

  24. Fees • Each team will receive a payment schedule via email with their individual team payments and due dates. There will also be 2 fees due to the school for Varsity and JV (first one in August). Athletes need an updated physical on file to register with the school fee pay. Info will be emailed out as the date approaches. • Due by 4/18: 325.00 JV/Varsity and 125.00 Middle School. • Fees are all inclusive and cover coaching, choreography, comp fees (MS), team bonding, etc for a full season.
