Phillip II • King of Macedonia • Wanted control of Greece and won! • Used phalanx formation (copied from Greeks) to win • Had his sights set on Persia • Murdered during his daughter’s wedding
Phillip Marries Cleopatra • Many consider this marriage his worst mistake • Cleopatra, a Macedonian girl from of high nobility. • This marriage led to a break with Olympias and his son Alexander.
Alexander and Phillip • "Here is the man who was making ready to cross from Europe to Asia, and who cannot even cross from one table to another without losing his balance."
Alexander • Studied under the great philosopher Aristotle • A trained warrior and military leader • At 20 yrs old he stepped in his murdered father’s place • Within a year he enslaved the Theban people to show what would happen if Greeks decided to revolt
The Conquests of Alexander • He set his sights on the Persian Empire and beyond • Fought and won a decisive victory at Gaugamela against Darius III • Darius III was killed by his own men/Persia was now Alexander’s
Death of Alexander • Not satisfied, He pushed on for India • His troops became weary hiking through mountains • His soldiers refused to go any further • Alexander died on the march back in Babylon
Alexander’s Empire Why is Alexander called “the Great”?
Spreading Greek Culture • New cities Alexander conquered were modeled after Greece. • Most were named Alexandria, he encouraged Greeks to move into these new cities. • He encouraged the conquered people to keep their own religion and customs. • As a result, Alexander’s empire was a perfect mix of Persian, Egyptian, Syrian and other cultures with Greek ideas Hellenistic-”Greek like”
Main Ideas of Section 3 • Macedonia conquered Greece in the 300s BC. • Alexander the Great built an empire that united much of Europe, Asia, and Egypt. • The Hellenistic kingdoms formed from Alexander’s empire blended Greek and other cultures. • Alexander the Great built a huge empire and helped spread Greek culture into Egypt and Asia.
