  1. Australopithecus Why were they so special?

  2. Difference between Apes These species looked somewhat alike and different from apes. They were the first species to be WALKING on two legs. When climate changed in Africa, the apes had to move on, so Australopithecus started to thrive in the world. What is the proof that they walked on two legs? Archaeologists found that they had a short, bowl-shaped pelvis and their spinal column met their skull perpendicularly. If Australopithecus were to walk on four legs, though, you would probably still mistake them as apes.

  3. Features • Distinguishing Features? • - Flat nose • ***if you looked at an Australopithecus, you would see straight inside the nose*** • - Low, Sloping forehead • - Huge eyebrow ridge • - Jutting jaw

  4. When and Where? Australopithecus probably walked on Earth 5-1 million years ago (MYA). Around 10 million years ago, the climate changed in Africa. When the climate changed, there were fewer trees, so apes could not swing around. There were more grasslands and the only options for apes were: move, die or evolve. Australopithecus only lived in Africa; they did not travel.
