The Periodic Table: Episode 1Members of the Empire • Each lab table has samples of different elements. • Write its state: solid, liquid or gas • Write its color (or lack of color) • Write its luster: shiny or dull • Follow the directions at each table for investigating the physical properties of the elements. • Write the description of the properties in each element’s space on the giant periodic table.
The Periodic Table: Episode 1Members of the Empire • Use a highlighter to draw the stairstep line. Discuss the following with your group: • What are the properties of the elements on the left of the stairstep line? • What type of elements are on the left of the stairstep line? • What are the properties of the elements on the right of the stairstep line? • What type of elements are on the right of the stairstep line? • What are the properties of the elements on the stairstep line? • What type of elements are on the stairstep line? Summarize your findings in the chart on the bottom of page 6.

Alderaan • There are samples of 4 different elements in the glass tubes. • Describe their appearance inside the tube. • Turn the switch on the right side to see what color each emits when its electrons are excited by electricity. (Do not write that part down.) • Turn the switch off.
Endor • There are samples of 3 different elements in the test tubes. DO NOT OPEN THEM! • Do not invert the test tubes. • Describe their appearance inside the test tube.
Tatooine • There are samples of 3 different elements in the test tubes. DO NOT OPEN THEM! • Do not invert the test tubes. • Describe their appearance inside the test tube.
Naboo • There are samples of 3 different elements in the test tubes. DO NOT OPEN THEM! • Do not invert the test tubes. • Describe their appearance inside the test tube.
Hoth • There are samples of 2 different elements and one insulator. • Describe the visual physical properties of the 2 elements. • Place a piece of ice on each element and on the insulator. Observe the change in the ice on each. • Use your observations to describe each element as an insulator or a conductor of heat. • Place the ice/water in the sink.
Dagobah • There are samples of 5 different elements and a digital multimeter. • Turn on the multimeter by pressing in the power button on the top left. The screen should read “1”. • Have your partner watch the screen as you place the metal tips of both probes on a sample. Be careful not to let the probes touch each other. • If the number changes, the sample conducts electricity. If it stays at 1, the element does not conduct electricity. Record your observations on the giant periodic table. • Turn off the multimeter by pressing the power button.
