Personal Pronoun/Antecedent Agreement • A personal pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number and gender. • The number of a noun/pronoun indicates whether it is singular or plural. • EX: Mrs. Jones painted her house. • EX: The Jones family painted their house. • The pronoun should indicate the gender. • EX: Amy accessed her friend’s Home Page • EX: John lost his vocabulary packet.
Or/Nor/And Agreement • Use a singular personal pronoun to refer to two or more singular antecedents joined by or or nor. • EX: Neither Keith nor Rob remembers his password. • Use a plural personal pronoun to refer to two or more singular antecedents joined by and. • EX: Emily and Christinahave turned in their homework.
Shift in Person • Be careful not to shift person when dealing with pronoun/antecedent agreement. • Incorrect: Anna is studying physics, a course you need for a degree in science. • Correct: Anna is studying physics, a course she needs for a degree in science.
Unknown Gender • When gender is not specified, use the masculine and feminine pronouns or rewrite the sentence. • EX: A student should keep his or her password a secret. • EX: Students should keep their passwords a secret.
Using Reflexive Pronouns • A reflexive pronoun must have an antecedent in the sentence which it appears. • Incorrect: Todd helped Jen and myself to search the Internet. • Correct: Todd helped Jen and me to search the Internet.
Indefinite Pronouns • Use a singular pronoun to refer to a singular indefinite pronoun. • EX: One of the boys will print his homework. • Use a plural pronoun to refer to a plural indefinite pronoun. • EX: All of the boys will print their homework. • An indefinite pronoun that can be singular or plural, agreement depends on the word to which to pronoun refers. • EX: Some of the document lost its formatting. • EX: Some of the students brought their books.
Problems in Agreement • A personal pronoun requires an antecedent that is either stated or clearly understood. • Incorrect: The program was easy, but they didn’t explain it clearly. • Correct: The program was easy, but it wasn’t explained clearly. • A personal pronoun should always refer to a single obvious antecedent. • Incorrect: I saw the procedure in the manual, but now I can’t find it. • Correct: I saw the procedure in the manual, but now I can’t find the procedure. • Correct: I can’t find the procedure I saw in the manual.
Problems in Agreement • Use the personal pronoun you only when the reference is truly to the reader or the listener. • Incorrect: In a sound studio, you see high-tech equipment. • Correct: In a sound studio, one sees high-tech equipment.
