  7. Carapinheira The village Carapinheira is in a soft hill above the fields by the Mondego River, 5 km northeast from Montemor-o-Velho. From the highest point you have an extremely beautiful view: the green rize fields along the river. 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

  9. since 1984: a preparatory school, • 1995/1996 transformed into a Middle School (5th – 9th) • amplified in 1999 (construction of a new block of classrooms, a field for games and a balneary) • In 2003/2004, two kindergartens, 8 primary schools and our Middle School were included in a School Group, being our school the mother school. 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

Social and economical reality • Low scholarity of parents: • 50% - primary school (4th grade), • 25% - 6th grade, • 10% - 9th grade • 7% - secondary school • 3% - medium or superior degree. • Main working branches: • civil construction, - housewives, • agricultures, - housekeepers, • lorry-drivers. - factories or commerce. 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

Social and economical reality • Low social, economical and cultural family background, • Lack of support at home with schoolwork, • Poor motivation for school life, • Family disorganization and an ill-favoured social economical background: • social exclusion • low personal and professional expectations Students often study in group at the library 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

Lack of free time occupations after school • Free time activities: • watching TV, • listening to music • playing computer (about 50% have a pc at home). • Poor reading habits Mobile Bookshop visits school • Sports activities are limited to the ones the school offers.   22. Students and the use of ICT • This school year, for the first time, a subject called ICT for students of the 9th grade, part of the Educational Reform and the national curriculum. 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

Teacher Training in ICT • The school has had some courses in its own facilities, available for teachers of our school, promoted by external entities; • Proposes new topics to the Training Centre • Some more innovative teachers organize small training sessions for the colleagues, which are generally well accepted and enthusiastically attended. • Also the office staff has had regular formation in ICT area, so that they can make proper use of the administration software. 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

Difficulties • Most of them are related with the equipment: • acquisition of the necessary hardware and software, • high cost of technical assistance and maintenance, • lack of adequate teacher training. • another computer lab would be necessary, in order to make the use of ICT more regular. • Felt by teachers, who sometimes feel uncomfortable, because some students have more knowledge. • Not always are they prepared to overcome small technical problems 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004

Importance of ICT - Conclusion • Students acquire computing skills • Students have access to vaster information resources which they otherwise wouldn’t have • Very advantageous and gratifying in the teaching-learning process • Contributes to the development of global competencies, and therefore to a better preparation for our students’ future. 1st ELFE Conference - 22 - 23 November 2004
