Electric Potential (V) • Also known as Voltage • The force that moves or pushes electrons through a circuit • Connected in parallel to a circuit. • Measured in volts (V)
Resistance (R) • Resists or reduces the current in a circuit • Converts electrical energy into other forms of energy (heat, light, motion, sound) • Measured in Ohms (Ω)
Resistance (R) • Ohm’s Law states that the larger the resistance, the smaller the current • R = V/I
Measuring Voltage and Current Voltmeter Ammeter • Measures the voltage drop in a circuit in volts (V) • Measures the amount of electric current flowing past a point in a circuit in amps (A)
Measuring Voltage and Current Voltmeter Ammeter • Connected to a circuit in parallel between two points • Connected to a circuit in series
Multimeter • Can be used to measure current, voltage or resistance • When the meter is set to read current, it must be connected in series • When the meter is set to read potential difference, it must be connect in parallel with the load
