Cell Wall & Plasmodesmata Biology 4 Honors Robyn Ritchie Eunice Briet
Function of the Cell Wall • plant cells, some bacterial cells, fungi • Rigid, protective layer around plasma membrane • 10-100 x thicker than plasma membrane
Function of the Cell Wall • Mechanical support for the cell • Maintains shape of plant cells • Prevents excess water intake • Holds the plant up against the force of gravity
Primary Cell Wall • First formed cell wall • Outermost layer • Comparatively thin and flexible.
Secondary Cell Wall • Lays between the plasma membrane and primary wall • Strong and durable • Provides cell protection and support • Ex: Wood
Middle Lamella • Thin layer of sticky polysaccharides (pectins) • Lays between primary cell walls • Glues adjacent walls together
Plasmodesmata • Intercellular cytoplasmic bridges • Facilitates communication • Aids in the transport of materials b/w cells • Water • Nutrients • Signalling molecules • Even viruses! (Shhh!!!)
