  1. The Semantic Discovery System Using Federal Budget Spreadsheet Data Ian Goldsmid and Brian Donnelly August 5, 2008

  2. Preface http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2009/db.html

  3. Preface • A couple of quick and hopefully helpful comments on the spreadsheets? (Brian Donnelly): • I chose to prepend (attach to the beginning of data) the columns that had the dates indicators {1962, 1963 ...} with {YEAR_1962, YEAR_1963 ...} as a temporary workaround as our SDS currently gets confused with pure number values for column labels. I hope this is OK but we are getting feedback from lots of people on what they want with real world spreadsheets and this is easily changed from user feedback. • For some reason (forgive my impertinence in renaming your spreadsheets) I renamed the 3 xls to the names you see here. A key driver now that we are starting to use Semantics to empower spreadsheets is that the spreadsheet (concept) names look more intuitive in long nested queries, and this goes 10-fold for the relationship names. • Other than that everything seemed fairly straightforward, everything generates OK and the OWL is ideal to let you create sub/equivalent classes to amplify the model, e.g. OverBudgetOutlays et seq.

  4. Preface • We rather easily generated an Ontology/Model from the Federal Budget spreadsheet data - plus a number of example queries (which are saved as reusable query files) (it didn't take very long :-) ). • If you want to download SDS and give this a go yourself - please let me know and I will provide you with the necessary files to add to your default SDS Installation that will enable you to play around with the Federal Budget data in SDS yourself.

  5. First we create a “Relationship Sheet as explained in detail page 101 - SDS CookBook: http://www.semanticbusinessintelligence.com/getting_started.html This is the sheet created for Federal Budget Data

  6. Having Started The Semantic Discovery System we now find the EpaBudget Model in the Server Explorer Panel – and right click “Create Query” to see the Graph

  7. Initial Graph View of EpaBudget

  8. Clicking on the plus (+) sign on any node (Concept) shows the Concept’s Attributes (Spreadsheet Columns)

  9. We now choose to recreate a Query the we had previously saved as a .gql file

  10. This is 2006ActualAndBudgetSpendAndReceipts.gql

  11. The filtered Model from the previous slide was created by a simple process of Including specific Attributes – (left hand image) – the bolded Attributes in the right hand image represent all those that were Included

  12. This is 2006ActualAndBudgetSpendAndReceiptsOver100KForEnergy.gql

  13. The filtered Model from the previous slide was created by a simple process of Including specific Attributes, and then adding Filters…

  14. This is 2006HighReceiptAccountsVersusBudget.gql

  15. This is 2006OnBudgetAnalysis.gql
