  2. Description FIG Figs are one of the easiest fruit trees to grow in our area. They do well in our alkaline soils, and can quickly grow into lovely, spreading shade trees. Trees produce fruit in as little as two to three years, and thrive and produce with little effort for the next hundred years or so. CARROTS Once you’ve eaten a carrot you grew yourself, you will never want to go back to the bland, bitter, soapy-tasting carrots from the grocery store. Carrots have splendid flavor, but you’d never know it if you didn’t pull one out of your own garden and eat it. Carrots need patience to grow- they take a long time to germinate. If your garden is sun challenged, you can grow carrots (and parsnips) with as little as four hours of sun a day. DILL &CARAWAY Dill and caraway are members of the carrot family, and have highly similar care requirements, but usage differs. Dill leaves offer a spritely tang to fresh garden salads and perk up frozen vegetables. Caraway leaves are used sometimes in the same way that parsley is. PERSIMMON Persimmon is a lovely tree with tasty fruit and is found across the northern hemisphere. Oriental persimmons come to us from Asia, and are not so happy growing in Southwest soils, sun, and dry air. Lucky for us we have some native persimmons that grow well in our region.
