Data Portal for the “Climate c hanges Spatial Planning” program

A comprehensive data portal for the "Climate Changes Spatial Planning" program, offering high-quality knowledge infrastructure on climate change and spatial planning in the Netherlands. The portal consolidates data and model results from various projects, promoting information exchange, collaboration, and better access for users.

  1. Data Portal for the“Climate changes Spatial Planning” program Henk Klein Baltink (KNMI) Fred Bosveld (KNMI) Hans de Wolf (Dutch Space)

  2. outline • “Climate changes Spatial Planning” program • Data portal project (COM-1) • CESAR – database management system ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  3. Climate changes Spatial Planning- main goals - • Offer the Dutch government, the private sector and other stakeholders a clustered, high-quality and accessible knowledge infrastructure on the interface of climate change and spatial planning • Engage in a dialogue between stakeholders to develop innovative integral approaches of spatial planning and land use that anticipate for climate change and contribute to a safe, sustainable and resilient socio-economic infrastructure in the Netherlands ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  4. Climate changes Spatial Planning- main knowledge themes - ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  5. Climate changes Spatial Planning- example Mitigation projects - ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  6. Climate changes Spatial Planning- data type products - • experimental data • data from monitoring • model output • (tailored) scenario’s • historic data • land-use maps • …….. ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  7. Climate changes Spatial Planning- data portal (1) - Objectives COM-1 project: • provide a central point (Virtual Data Centre) for project members and external users to access (consolidated) data products that are created by projects in adaptation, mitigation and climate scenarios. • consolidation (in time and space) of data and model results (depending on user demands and in cooperation with the projects involved) ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  8. Climate changes Spatial Planning- data portal (2) - What does this mean ? • COM-1 provide services to assist program projects to make their scientific results available to users • COM-1 does not provide a physical data centre, but integrates the data stores from the projects • Projects have the freedom and obligation to manage their own data, COM-1 provides a common point of access ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  9. Climate changes Spatial Planning- data portal (3) - What are the benefits ? • Improved exchange of information between projects • Economy of scale • Not every project has to develop its own access technology • This allows development of better access for users • (New forms of) collaboration possible • Modern technologies enable better collaboration • Sharing not only data, but also models and tools ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  10. Climate changes Spatial Planning- data portal (4) - the central point of contact (website) is a Catalog of data products • shows what instances of data products are available • has a search that produces a list of data products that match user-specified criteria • provides identification of the actual data products • is accessible through the internet Catalog searches through metadata! Correct definition of metadata is essential ! ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  12. CESAR database management system • CESAR: • consortium of 7 Dutch institutes • wide range of atmospheric and hydrological observations • long term monitoring (> 10 years) • host for measurement campaigns • partner and important data provider • in “Climate changes Spatial Planning” program ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  13. CESAR - surface and tower observations - ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  14. Radar planned on top of tower FM-CW Doppler polarimetric 3 beams CESAR - Remote Sensing systems - ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  15. CESAR - database management system - • objectives: • facilitate data exchange between members • harmonize data distribution • support access by (web) portals ( eg. COM-1 project) • user community: • projects e.g. BSIK-KvR, CEOP, KODAC, BSRN.. • individual researchers ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  16. CESAR- database management system - • present status: • data policy established • file format selected (netCDF) • filename convention defined • variable name based on CF-1 convention • metadata should comply with Dutch Core Set Metadata • access via web portal (and ftp for privileged users) ADAGUC symposium KNMI

  17. to conclude: • (definition of) metadata important ! (use standards) • build/use generic interface between (meta)database and portal(s) • provide conversion tools for data-providers? ADAGUC symposium KNMI
