  1. Welcome to Algebra with Mrs. Cohen!

Course Curriculum • Algebra is a college prep course designed to assist students in mastering Algebra skills required for success in high school level math • Quarter 1 covers a bit of ‘review’ material. New material will be introduced throughout the school year and we will ‘scaffold’ both new and review concepts. • Grades from this class will determine High School placement in math. • Common Core State Standards

Common Core Standards • Each Chapter will have a CCSS ‘task’/activity • Incorporating new language and assessment practices. • 13-14 State Testing TBD • CCSS required to be taught in all grades starting 14-15 school year. • To try some sample questions go to www.smarterbalanced.org/pilot-test • Increasing depth of student knowledge

  4. Essential Common Core Values 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  5. Geometry Placement • Placement for Geometry in 9th grade (or 8th grade if student is a current 7th grader): • 75% or higher test average for the year • Proficient or higher on CST in May 2014 • Teacher recommendation

  6. Course Requirements • All students have been assigned a textbook that is to be left at home, a class set is provided. Link to online textbook on my webpage under ‘web resources’ and DVD’s available upon request. • Math section in multi-subject binder OR math folder • Plenty of college ruled paper for homework • One-subject spiral notebook for note-taking • Several Pencils (mechanical or wooden) • Correcting Pens • Student planner (to record homework daily)

  7. Course Grading • 25% Class work & Homework (Any late or re-do assignments must be turned no later than the end of the unit, may be subject to partial credit) • 65% Tests & Quizzes (I will do my best to post upcoming tests/quizzes under “Algebra Homework”. • Studying is necessary for success on tests and quizzes!) • 10% Organization & Participation
