Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Why is the Our Father so important (give three points)? 1) ) It contains Jesus’ personal teaching: • This is more than a Gospel “account” (“according to…”) – it is taught by Jesus himself. 2) It contains Jesus’ very words: “This term abbais an ipsissimavox (very words) of Jesus…”: many quotations may paraphrase, but these words are directly from Him 3) It summarizes basics of teaching of Christ • “…the Lord’s Prayer is the clearest and, in spite of its terseness, the most comprehensive summary of Jesus’ proclamation which we possess.” (J. (1) God long called “Father” in OT (Old Testament): Jesus expresses that faith • “Look down from heaven and see, from thy holy and glorious habitation… thou art our father” (Isaiah 63:15-16) (2) God long seen as supplying our food: Jesus fulfills that faith • “…feed me with the food that is needful for me…” (Proverbs 30:8); “Bread of Presence” in OT worship; constant theme (e.g., manna) of God supplying our needs (3) Forgiveness and repentance in OT: Jesus completes that forgiveness • “Forgive your neighbor the wrong he has done… your sins will be pardoned…” (Sirach 28:2) (4) Theme of God’s “kingdom” also in OT: Jesus draws on that understanding “Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11) (5) Prayer is similar: strong resemblance of Our Father to the “Kaddish” • A central Jewish prayer (see following slide)
