Looking for Loopholes

The origin of the word “loophole” comes from the castles with narrow vertical slits from which arrows, and later guns could be shot while protecting the people in the castle. NOW – it means an ambiguity in a law or security, which can be used to circumvent the intent of the law.

  2. Looking for Loopholes • Attendance – Hebrews 10:25 • How many services are “required” • Must I attend Sunday pm? • Do I have to go on Wednesday night? • Must I be present for gospel meetings? • Real issue – Why would one NOT WANT to attend every time they could?

  3. M D R • Many are looking for some “escape” clause in the New Testament • There are more then 15 different “loophole teachings” seeking to justify previous divorces and re-marriages. • Many look for a loophole after it touches a family member.

Acts 2:38 • There have been many hours of debate and discussion on one 3-letter word - “for” in the phrase - “for the remission of sins” • Some argue – For – as in “I laugh for joy.” That means I laugh BECAUSE I have joy. • They try to say that baptism is “because we have already received the remission of sins.”

  5. Thief on the cross • Many seek to avoid being baptized by saying that the thief on the cross was not baptized. • Neither was David, Moses, Abraham, or any other Old Testament person. • The thief lived and died under the law of Moses, not the law of Christ.

  6. Not Forbidden • “The Bible does not say not to _______ .” • The Bible does not mention by name – abortion,gambling, lottery, premarital sex, instrumental music in worship • When we want to do something – we pull out this old loophole.

  7. No Command • “The Bible does not say I have to ______.” • This statement is used for any good thing that we don't want to do. • Communion every Sunday, Wednesday night attendance, Read Bible daily, worship in a building, use a projector, song books, PA system

  8. Salvation • Many are waiting to obey the gospel with a “death-bed confession.” • “What if I am on the way to be baptized and a tree falls on me and kills me?” tries to make baptism unimportant. • I don't need to obey the gospel now.

  9. Grace • There are many abuses of Grace. • Some believe in “automatic grace” that forgives a sin as soon as I commit it. • “We do not contribute one whit to our salvation.” Rubel Shelley • Many are looking for salvation by grace without any act of obedience.

  10. Hell • God is loving and kind. He would not send anyone to hell forever. • Many are holding to the idea of universal salvation. • God will change His mind about hell and judgment.

  11. Just Obey God • W. C. Fields was reading the Bible on his deathbed. A friend asked about it. He said, “I am looking for loopholes.” • We could obey God with half the energy that we spend looking for a way out. • Church window painted shut, thief opened it and stole $12.
