Resolving Conflict: NVC style Putting Nonviolent Communication to use
NVC’s Purpose • Nonviolent Communication is applicable to resolve ANY form of conflict. • Dr. Marshall B Rosenberg is the founder of NVC • He has used this strategy to resolve conflicts in different situations such as: • Marriage Conflicts • Family Conflict • Work Conflict • Strangers conflict • NVC can be used universally
Why it works ? Using different techniques than the normal mediation process Normal Mediation techniques: Deliberate over issues/strategies for a way to compromise NVC conflict resolution technique: Focus on identifying needs of both parties, only look for strategies to fulfill both party’s needs.
Key Element: Create a Connection between the people who are in conflict
Express our own needs • Search for the REAL needs of the other person • Both parties verify each other’s unmet needs • Provide Empathy to better understand each party’s point of view • Collaboratively propose strategies for resolving the issue 5 steps to solving conflict
Present & Positive Language • Present language statements: Refers to what is wanted at THIS moment • Example: one person may say, “I’d like you to tell me if you would be willing to do more chores this weekend?” • The same request using Present Language, “Would you be willing to do more chores this weekend?” • “Would you be willing to…. Keeps the conversation respectful. • Present language adds clarity • The more specific you make you request the better chance you have at the other person understanding. • Leads to resolving conflict faster
Using Action Verbs • Important to say what we DO want instead of what we DON’T want • Not using Action verbs could cause confusion, and resistance • Example not using action verbs: “ I want you to leave me alone” • Example using action verbs: “I want you to give me space and time to myself” Provides Clarity for BOTH parties
REMEMBER …… EMPATHY Empathy: The ability to understand and share feelings with someone If we want them to hear us we have to empathize When people are upset they may need empathy, before they can hear or understand what is being said. Pain creates disconnect Practice Makes PERFECT !
