OBJECTIVES Thiscourseaimstodevelop: - readingskills and strategies / comprehensionofdifferentgenres and typesoftexts; - the abilitytocarry out criticaltextsanalyses (bothwritten and oral); • the abilitytounderstandlanguagedifferences and techniquesamonggenres; • the abilitytoanalyse style, contents and culture(s) also in a translationperspective.

  3. 45 HOURS: THEORY AND PRACTICE (more practice than theory I hope) AT THE END OF THE TERM (December) YOU WILL TAKE A TEST WHICH IS PART OF THE FINAL EXAM. THE STUDENTS WHO DO NOT TAKE THE TEST OR THOSE WHO DO NOT PASS IT OR THOSE WHO ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THEIR MARKS WILL STUDY THE WHOLE PROGRAMME FOR THE ORAL. ALONG WITH DECEMBER TEST, ALL THE STUDENTS WILL WRITE A FINAL PAPER TO BE HANDED IN AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE ORAL EXAM. This final paper will be on ONE of the two novels I chose for this year’s course. You have to read both, but choose only one for the paper. The two novels must be read during the first term and they could be part of December test. The two novels are: Trainspotting by I. Welsh Fight Club by C. Palahniuk (I will give you the precise assignment next week)

  4. N. B. During the course you will write some ppts to be presented during classes. Ppts and other in itinere work will form your profile. ALL THE EXCHANGES TEACHER-STUDENTS WILL BE IN ENGLISH (CLASSES, TUTORIAL HOURS, E-MAILS ETC.)

  5. Yourtasks Each lesson or groups of lessons on the same topic will be followed by practical tasks to be carried out either in the second half of the lessons or at home. After the tasks you will discuss them with me and your colleagues. You will keep all these exercises in a folder to be handed in at the end of the course. I will read,evaluate and consider all the activities for the oral interview (1 or 2 extra marks)

  6. CONTENTS 1 • The concept of text, text type and text genre; • Definition of text analysis with examples • ESP (English for Specific Purposes) features: - Lexicon (idioms, figures of speech, collocations, lexical density etc.); - Syntax; - Textuality (cohesion and coherence)

  7. CONTENTS 2 Main features and analysis of: • JOURNALISTIC TEXTS (PRINT AND INTERNET TEXTS); • ADVERTISING TEXTS (PRINT, INTERNET TEXTS, VIDEO COMMERCIALS); • TOURIST TEXTS (TRAVEL GUIDES, PRINT AND INTERNET TEXTS); • LITERARY TEXTS • SONGS • MOVIES

Texts are seenaslanguageunitswhichhave a definablecommunicativefunction, characterisedbysuchprinciplesascohesion, coherence, and informativeness/informativitywhich can beusedtoprovide a formaldefinitionofwhatconstitutestheiridentifyingtextuality or texture.
