Chain of InfectionModel Chapter 13
Chain of Infection • Identify links (Ex.) • How to break the links
1. Causative Agent • Pathogen (See types of pathogens) • Tx depends on type of pathogen • Bacteria Antibiotic • Virus Rest • Protozoa Anti protozoa • Fungal Antifungal
2. Reservoir • Where the pathogens live • Ex. = Human body, animals, environment • Pathogens can live on surfaces from a couple of minutes to a few hours
3. Portal of Exit • A way of escape and spread • Can leave the reservoir by way of saliva, blood, open skin, draining wound
4. Mode of Transmission • Way in which pathogen is transmitted • Contaminated hands are the most common mode
5. Portal of Entry • A way to enter the new reservoir • Ex. = Break in the skin, mouth, nose, eyes
6. Susceptible Host • Vulnerable human • What lowers the immune system? • Not enough sleep • Stress • Malnutrition • Impaired immune system • Recent transplant • Post surgery • Cancer pts.
Example – Identify the 6 links • The FDA recalled jars of peanut butter from 7 states because of Salmonella. People who consumed the contaminated peanut butter developed N/V with a high fever. • All jars were traced back to a plant in Georgia. • Upon investigation, the plant failed to repair a leaky roof which was above the assembly line with open jars of peanut butter ready to be capped and shipped.
