Early Life • Moved around a lot during his lifetime • Loved living on the farm and became fascinated with animals • At the age of six began wanting to learn how to draw because of his fascinations of the beautiful scenery all around him • Helped out his family a lot working for his father and not expecting to get paid
Early Life • Married Lillain (Lilly) on July 13, 1925 in Idaho • Had their first child on December 19, 1933 whose name was Diane Marie • Second child was born on December 31, 1936 and was named Sharon Mae
Getting Started • By 8th grade, Walt knew he wanted to be a cartoonist • Landed a job at the Kansas City Film Ad company, left at age 20 • Became president of his own company Laugh-O-Gram Films and soon moved to Hollywood • Funds ran low, so he had to sell this company. Him and his brother started a new company together called Walt Disney Studios in 1926
First Cartoons and Films • “Alice’s Wonderland” was his first short film • Inspired by a real mouse to create the “Mickey Mouse” we know today along with his girlfriend Minnie • First Mickey Mouse cartoons were started on March 1928 • The invention of this character led to many, many more by Walt
First Cartoons and Films • Had a wide variety of full length films including the following: “Snow White”, “Pinocchio”, “Dumbo”, “Bambi”, “Cinderella”, “Mary Poppins”, “Peter Pan”, “Lady and the Tramp”, and many more
Success • His studio in Hollywood gained much reputation and considered as “Hollywood’s New Hero” • Presented with many awards such as the George Washington award in 1963 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom • Him and Roy also established the California Institute of the Arts in 1961 • Brought in more than $100 million a year and holds the record for the most Academy Awards won
Success • Planned and built Disneyland which opened near LA in 1955 and before his death began the second amusement park called Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL • Walt Disney World opened in 1971 • The building of these amusement parks were a dream come true for Walt
Later Life • Him and his wife were happily married for 41 years • Passed away on December 5, 1966 in Los Angeles, CA from lung cancer • Him and Roy went to the dedication of the Walt Disney Municipal Park and Pool on July 4, 1956 • Also had an elementary school dedicated to him called Walt Disney Elementary
Legacy • The company he founded has become the world’s largest entertainment site • Can be rightly compared to the most successful industrialists in history • Brought joy, happiness, and meanings through his work, as well as, communication to the people • Legend and Folk Hero of the 20th century
