  1. SIL Speech Analyzer: TutorialPart 2 • Dr. Barbara Brindle • CD 508 – Voice Disorders • Dr. Dudley Bryant • PHYS 130 - Acoustics

  2. Measurement OR .. overcoming your fear of Instrumental Analysis

  3. Instrumental Evaluation:Tasks • Sustained Vowel • Intoned Vowel • Conversation • Reading

  4. Instrumental Analysis: Data • Frequency – range & average • Intensity - range & average • Duration of signal • Musical note conversion [optional] • Depicts pitch and rhythm using musical notation • Spectral Characteristics • No numerical report of jitter, shimmer, or noise to harmonic ratio • Visually inspect spectogram & spectrum.

  5. Status Bar

  6. Status Bar: Left to Right • Location of Beginning cursor on x-axis – represents point in time being measured • Time interval between beginning and ending cursors • Semitones/ deciBels/ % of graph • Frequency in Hz/ % of graph

  7. Be careful to note which cursor you are manipulating in which graph. The values in the two right hand status boxes will change depending upon the graph being manipulated.

  8. Demonstration

  9. Clinical Benefits of Instrumental Analysis • Supplements perceptual evaluation by quantifying data • Measures progress/change • Biofeedback

  10. Role of Speech Analyzer in Voice Disorders • Not magic • Not rocket science • Simple, but effective, tool • Affordable shareware
