  1. The Maid of Cefn Ydfa. This folk tale originates in Llangynnwyd, Maesteg. It tells of a young lady by the name of Ann Thomas 1704 – 27, who was deeply in love with Will Hopkin. Will was a poet and slater. Ann was forced to marry a man by the name of Anthony Maddoks, an influential solicitor. This broke Ann’s heart. Will left the area. But returned when he received a letter telling that Ann was very ill.

  2. Will arrived at Ann’s home but she was very ill. She died in Wills arms at the age of 23. She was buried in Llangynnwyd. Will wrote a famous song declaring his love for Ann, called Bugeilio’r Gwennith Gwyn. Will died in 1741 at 47 years old. He was buried alongside Ann.

  3. There is no proof that this story is true, however a poet by the name of Will Hopkin did live in Llangynwyd and is buried there. Click on the speaker to listen to the tune.
